Area Round-Up: Rangers, Cardinals and Wildcats all suffer MAC losses

ST. HENRY — A cold-shooting third quarter by the New Knoxville boys basketball team allowed  St. Henry to wrest control away from the Rangers in a 59-49 Midwest Athletic Conference win.

St. Henry outscored the Rangers 15-6 in the third, as the Rangers went 2 of 14 from the floor.

“St. Henry has a nice defensive team with some physical kids who are strong,” New Knoxville head coach Kort Fledderjohann said. “They cranked up the intensity on us in the third quarter and offensively we didn’t match it. When you’re soft like we were in the third quarter that’s what happens. You can drive in the paint, but if you’re not strong you’re not going to finish.”

St. Henry’s Tyler Schwieterman scored a career-high 22 points on 6 of 12 shooting and a 10 of 13 game from the free throw line. St. Henry’s leading scorer Ryan Mikesell added 16 points before fouling out with several minutes left in the game.

Jalen Fullenkamp scored 15 points to lead New Knoxville while Shane Topp added 11 points.

New Knoxville slips to 4-4 and 0-1 in the MAC. The Rangers host Botkins on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

FORT RECOVERY 64, NEW BREMEN 51

 

NEW BREMEN — The Fort Recovery Indians began a game-deciding 13-0 run late in the third quarter and defeated the New Bremen Cardinals  64-51 in a Midwest Athletic Conference on Friday night. Elijah Kahlig led the Indians with 23 points and nine rebounds. Alex Kaiser had 17 points. Three players scored in double figures for the Cardinals with Nolan Fox leading the way with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Carson Manger had 14 points. Ben Homan added 10 points. Brent Goettemoeller of New Bremen made a basket with three minutes left in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 41-37, but the Indians then went on that 13-0 run to take control.

MARION LOCAL 51, MINSTER 41

MARIA STEIN — Student defeated teacher as Marion Local downed Minster 51-41 on Friday. in a Midwest Athletic Conference opener for the Flyers. Marion Local, coached by former longtime Minster assistant coach Kurt Goettemoeller,  stayed unbeaten at 6-0 on the season. Dustin Reithman paced the Flyer attack with 18 points. Luke Knapke chipped in with 12 points. The Wildcats (3-6, 0-2 MAC) were led by Jacob Stechschulte's 13 points.
