Area golf teams tee off seasons on Tuesday

MINSTER — The Minster girls golf team hosted the Minster Classic,  a unique-style tournament, at Arrowhead on Tuesday. The event featured a scoring system that had each team choose its best score from that hole from its entire team. Each golfer had to contribute at least one hole’s score.

Fort Loramie won the tournament with a best score of 36. Versailles finished second with a best score of 37. New Bremen won a tiebreaker for third place with a low score of 39. Minster took fourth with a low score of 39. Celina and Russia both had 40s. Riverside shot a 50 and Tri-Village’s low score was a 58. A skills competition was held after the nine-hole round.

Botkins boys golf wins at Elks

CELINA— The Botkins Trojans won the the season-opening Midwest Ohio Boys Preview at the Mercer County Elks with a 352 score behind four rounds of 90 or better. Roger Miller fired an 85, Seth Hanna had an 87 while Nick Okuly and Alex Roberts both shot 90s for the Trojans.

Lima Central Catholic finished second with a 362. James Riepenhoff had an 86. St. Henry finished third with a 382 team-score. St. Henry’s Brian Kremer was the match’s medalist with an 82. Marion Local finished fourth with a 392. Derek Platfoot shot a 96, Luke Knapke had a 97, Darrin Broering shot a 98 and Adam Kremer had a 101 Coldwater took fifth place with a 406. Tyler Kanney led the way for the Cavs with an 84.

SPENCERVILLE 176, FORT JENNINGS 218

DELPHOS — The Spencerville boys golf team opened the season with a convincing 176-218 victory over Fort Jennings at the Delphos Country Club on Tuesday. Mitchell Youngpeter of Spencerville led the way with a 40 in the nine-hole match. James Schaad shot a 43, Chance Campbell had a 44 and Keaton Gillispie shot a 49 to round out Spencerville’s 176 score. Brian Wood added a 57 and Parker Campbell had a 61 for Spencerville. Lucas Luebrecht led Fort Jennings with a 49.
