Area College Basketball Players Start Seasons
Ryan VanderHorst - Walsh
Ryan VanderHorst, a New Knoxville grad and Walsh sophomore basketball player, is getting minutes off the bench for the Cavaliers this season. VanderHorst added two points, three assists and a steal against Penn State Brandywine on Saturday in Walsh’s 109-52 win. VanderHorst had two points and three assists against Fisher College in the regular season opener. Walsh won, 82-50. Walsh played an exhibition game against Ohio State on November 6, with VanderHorst scoring three points against the Buckeyes at Value City Arena. Ohio State won that exhibition, 95-49.
Brad Piehl - Findlay
FINDLAY — Brad Piehl, a University of Findlay junior and New Knoxville grad, is averaging 12.3 points and eight rebounds per game through three games for Charlie Ernst’s Oilers. Piehl scored 15 points and grabbed four rebounds for the Oilers in an 84-40 win over West Liberty State on Thursday, Nov. 17. Piehl, a 6-foot-8 power forward, scored 16 points off the bench in a 74-71 loss to Malone on Nov. 15. Piehl added seven points off the bench on Nov. 12 in a 92-62 win over Ohio Valley. Findlay faces Cedarville tonight at 7:30 p.m.
Schnelle and Meyer - ONU
Scott Schnelle, an Ohio Northern senior and New Bremen grad, and Tony Meyer, an ONU junior and New Knoxville grad, helped lead the Polar Bears to the Days Inn Championship in Gettysburg, Pa. last weekend. Schnelle scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Meyer had four points and an assist in a 72-67 win over Hood in the title game. Schnelle had 14 points and seven boards while Meyer added four points and three assists in the Polar Bears’ 72-71 overtime win over Gettysburg on Friday.
Marcus Reineke - Cedarville
Marcus Reineke, a New Knoxville grad and Cedarville freshman, has made an instant contribution for the Yellow Jackets in his freshman season. Reineke scored eight points and grabbed three rebounds in Cedarville’s 106-87 win over Salem International on Saturday. Reineke had 11 points in the season opener against Roberts Wesleyan.
Caleb Williams - Mt. Vernon Naz.
Caleb Williams, a New Bremen grad and a Mount Vernon Nazarene sophomore, scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds in MVNU’s 79-56 loss to Cedarville on Saturday. Williams is maintaining a blog on the MVNU sports website chronicling his season.
