ADA — Ohio Northern senior center and New Bremen graduate Scott Schnelle scored his 1,000th point for the Polar Bears on Wednesday night in ONU’s 64-55 win over Heidelberg.
Schnelle’s free throw with 14:21 left in the second half put him at the scoring plateau.
Schnelle scored 18 points on 14-of-15 shooting from the floor to go along with nine rebounds three assists and a block.
Schnelle is the 36th player in ONU men’s hoops history to reach 1,000 points, Ohio Northern’s sports information department reported.
“I have had four great teams around me here at ONU,” Schnelle said in an ONU release after the game. “There have been great guys, great coaches and everyone has been easy to play with. It is an honor to join this elusive club.”
Schnelle earned OAC Player of the Week honors the week before for his back-to-back 18-point performances against Capital and Marietta.
Schnelle also was named to the First Team of the Capital One Academic All-District 7 for his work in the classroom. Schnelle, a mechanical engineering major from New Bremen, will now go onto the Academic All-America ballot.
“Scott has been a pleasure to coach,” Ohio Northern head coach John Rhodes said after the game. “He is a great player, a good teammate and an unbelievable person. I am happy to be a part of his 1,000th point.”
ONU improved to 11-11 on the season and 7-8 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
New Knoxville grad Tony Meyer scored five points and added three rebounds for the Polar Bears.
