COLUMBUS — The Capital University men’s basketball team, coached by St. Marys Memorial High School grad Damon Goodwin, will host the Ohio Athletic Conference championship game on Saturday after ending the season of Ohio Northern and the college basketball careers of New Bremen grad Scott Schnelle and New Knoxville grad Tony Meyer with a 66-61 win on Thursday night. Capital trailed by a point at the half, but the Crusaders outscored ONU 42-36 in the second half to earn a spot in the title game against Wilmington on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The winner gets an automatic bid to the Division III NCAA tournament. Schnelle wrapped up his ONU career with seven points, four blocks, two rebounds and three assists. Meyer scored three points off the bench for the Polar Bears, who wrapped up their season at 14-14. Spencer Niekamp, a St. Henry grad, led Capital with 22 points. Mitch Westerheide added 11 points and Celina grad Michael Sommer had seven points.
Capital, Timmerman fall
ALLIANCE — The Capital University women’s basketball team bowed out of the Ohio Athletic Conference with a 84-78 loss to Mount Union. Stacy Timmerman, a Capital junior and New Bremen grad, scored 10 points and added two steals and a rebound for the Crusaders. Capital falls to 18-9.
