AREA ATHLETES: Men's hoops players hit stretch run in seasons
Brad Piehl, Findlay
Brad Piehl, a University of Findlay junior and New Knoxville grad, scored a team-high 15 points and had three assists, two rebounds and a blocked shot in Findlay’s 79-49 win over Ashland on Saturday. Findlay won its third straight game and improved to 15-4, 9-3 in the GLIAC on the season. Piehl averages 11.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game for the Oilers and has started 17 of his 19 games played. Piehl is an 84.7 percent free throw shooter and is shooting 61.2 percent from the floor. Findlay travels to Michigan Tech on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
Scott Schnelle, ONU
Scott Schnelle, an Ohio Northern senior and New Bremen grad, scored nine points and had two rebounds, two blocks and an assist in the Polar Bears’ 83-56 loss to John Carroll on Saturday. ONU has lost four of its last five games and slipped to 9-10, 5-7 in the OAC. Schnelle averages 12.1 points, 6.5 rebounds and leads the team with 34 blocks this season. ONU travels to Capital on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
Tony Meyer, ONU
Tony Meyer, an Ohio Northern senior and New Knoxville grad, had four points, three steals, three rebounds and two assists in the Polar Bears’ loss on Saturday. Meyer averages 2.9 points, 1.7 rebounds and is third on the team with 36 assists.
Ryan VanderHorst, Walsh
Ryan VanderHorst, a Walsh sophomore and New Knoxville grad, had five points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal in Walsh’s 104-67 win over Hougton College on Saturday. The Cavaliers improved to 18-4 and 7-2 in conference play. VanderHorst averages 6.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and is third on the team with 34 assists. Walsh hosts Akron-Wayne College on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Caleb Williams, Mt. Vernon Nazarene
Caleb Williams, a Mount Vernon Nazarene junior and New Bremen grad, scored 12 points and had four rebounds in the Cougars’ 60-56 win over Taylor University last Tuesday night. Williams did not play in Saturday’s overtime loss to Indiana Wesleyan with an injury to his hand. MVNU is 9-15 on the season and 3-9 in the MCC. Williams averages 9.4 points, 6.7 rebounds and leads the team with 39 blocks in 23 games played and started. The Cougars host Bethel tonight at 6 p.m.
Marcus Reineke, Cedarville
Marcus Reineke, a Cedarville freshman and New Knoxville grad, scored five points and had two rebounds and a steal off the bench for the Yellow Jackets in a 69-49 win over Urbana on Saturday. Cedarville improved to 12-7 on the season with the win. They’ve won five of their last six games. Reineke averages 6.1 points, 1.5 rebounds and is 26-for-56 (46.4 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. Cedarville hosts Grand Valley State tonight at 6 p.m.
Ross Heitkamp, Anderson
Ross Heitkamp, an Anderson freshman and Minster grad, scored five points on 2-of-3 shooting for the Ravens in an 83-57 win over Earlham on Saturday. The win was the 1,000th in program history at Anderson and improves the Ravens to 10-9 and 6-6 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Heitkamp averages 1.8 points per game in 12 games played this season. Anderson travels to Rose-Hulman on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
Capital Men’s Basketball
The Capital men’s basketball team, coached by St. Marys Memorial grad and former Roughrider standout Damon Goodwin, is 12-8, 10-3 in the OAC this season. Celina grad Michael Sommer is scoring 13.2 points per game for the Crusaders. St. Henry grad Spencer Niekamp is the team’s leading scorer at 13.9 points per game. Mitch Westerheide of Fort Loramie is scoring 5.8 points per game. Capital hosts Ohio Northern on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
