Anna tops Cards in Tip-Off title game, Rangers win consolation

New Knoxville's Paige Lehman, seen here on Friday night against Anna, scored 19 points to lead the Rangers to a win over Van Buren on Saturday night in the New Bremen Tip-Off Classic consolation game.

NEW BREMEN — After jumping out to a 22-5 lead after the first quarter, the defending state champion Anna Rockets coasted from there to defeat New Bremen 67-21 in the championship game of the annual Cardinal Tip-Off Classic on Saturday night.

Paige Lehman scored 19 points and the New Knoxville Rangers held the Van Buren Knights scoreless in the fourth quarter in a 59-11 victory in the consolation game.

In the championship game New Bremen got an opening basket to start the game on a basket by Julie Brown, but Anna came back with a three-point play by Natalie Billing. The Cardinals tied the game on a free throw from Hannah Holdren, but the rest of the quarter virtually belonged to Anna as they scored 15 unanswered points and ended the quarter with a 22-5 lead.

New Knoxville (2-0) gets right into MAC play when it entertains Versailles Thursday, while New Bremen (1-1) will travel to Celina Saturday at  noon.
