Anna too strong for New Bremen

October 1, 2011

ANNA — The running of senior running back Cole Furgason and two touchdowns in the final two minutes of the first half propelled the Anna Rockets to defeat the New Bremen Cardinals 34-6 in front of a homecoming crowd at Anna.

“We made the best of the bad situations with the weather,” Rocket head coach Bryan Rioch said. “We were coming off of a three game losing streak and the kids did a great job considering the conditions.”

Already leading 7-6 late in the second quarter the Rockets had the ball after a Cardinal punt on the Cardinal 35 with 3:08 left. Following a seven yard gain by Gage Beasecker and a two yard gain by Cole Furgason, Dustin Noffsinger broke loose on a 26-yard touchdown run. The kick by Nate Metz gave the Rockets a 14-6 lead with 1:36 left.

“We had a 14 point swing in about two minutes right before half,” Cardinals head coach Rob Messick said. “It was a real misfortune for the kids.”

Anna held New Bremen to a three and out and forced a punt at the Cardinal 26 with 32 seconds left. The Rockets took possession at midfield got called for holding on the first play making it first and 13 at the 45. Wes Wolters picked up the first down with a 20-yard gain and after a spike to stop the clock, quarterback Jay Meyer threw a pass that looked like a sure interception but the ball went through the hands of the defender and right into the hands of Chandon Williams for a 34-yard touchdown. The extra point kick made the score 21-6 at halftime.

“I think our special teams played real well tonight,” Rioch said. “The scoring in the last two minutes and going in the locker room 21-6 was pretty big. It was bad luck from their perspective so we were happy with putting up the points.”

It was New Bremen that got on the board first in the first quarter. After stopping Anna on fourth down in their first possession, the Cardinals took over at their 28 with 8:38 left.

The Cardinals had a couple of big plays including a 24-yard run by Elliott Westerbeck and a 17-yard pass on third down to Ben Chaney and concluded the drive with a 31-yard pass down the left sideline for the touchdown. The snap was bobbled and the run for two failed giving New Bremen a 6-0 lead with 4:56 left.

“We moved the ball well tonight,” Messick said. “We had a few negative plays that killed some of our drives but we did some nice things tonight. The kids played hard and the defense played well so I’m not upset with the kids effort because they played hard.”

Senior Cole Furgason started to show his running ability on the next drive. On the second play he got loose for a 27-yard gain from midfield and got a 15-yard gain down to the one where Dustin Noffsinger scored his first touchdown on a one-yard run. The kick by Nate Metz gave Anna a 7-6 lead with 2:25 left.

In the game Furgason rushed 24 times for 131 yards and one touchdown.

“Cole had a nice game tonight,” Rioch said. “Cold did real well. The offensive line will get a lot of credit for that.”

In the third quarter the Rocket special teams contributed. New Bremen had a fourth down at their five and was forced to punt. The ball was fumbled and Jacob Berning recovered in the endzone for a touchdown. The pass for two failed giving Anna a 27-6 lead with 3:25 left.

The Rockets conclude the scoring when Furgason scored on a 15-yard run. The extra point kick made the score 34-6 with 7:59 left in the game.

The Cardinals (0-6, 0-4) travels to Versailles next Friday, while Anna (3-3, 1-3) travels to Fort Recovery next Friday.
