Allan D. Downing Sr., 69, of rural Wharton, died at 6:42 p.m. Friday, April 6, 2012, at the Wyandot Memorial Hospital Emergency Room in Upper Sandusky.
He was born on Aug. 25, 1942, in Lima, to Alfred L. and Donna Mae (Garee) Downing, and his mother preceded him in death. His father survives in Spencerville.
On March 24, 1982, in Upper Sandusky, he married Trina K. Laipply, and she survives in rural Wharton.
He is also survived by his children, Jerry McGowan of Ottawa, Shelly Striegel of Warrensburg, Mo., Tammy Massingill of Palm Bay, Fla., Tina Taylor of Upper Sandusky, Lynetta Bigness of Kennewick, Wash., Lisa McGowan of Mesa, Ariz., Lawrence W. Perringer of Oaksdale, Wash., Audra Blank of Garfield, Wash., Allan D. (Angie) Downing Jr. of Sycamore, Levi A. Downing and Robert P. Downing, both of Wharton; a sister; 38 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Toni McGowan.
He was a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in the Vietnam War. While in the Navy, he was an optical repair specialist and instructor.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home in Carey, with the Rev. Jim Williams officiating.
The Carey Honor Guard will conduct a military service at the funeral home following the service.
A private burial will be at Wharton Richland-Union Cemetery near Wharton at a later date.
Family and friends will be received from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home in Carey.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Delaware Township Volunteer Fire Department or to Angeline School of Opportunity in care of the funeral home.
