Additional Details Released

March 20, 2014

ST. MARYS — More details have been released in the death of an Auglaize County man on March 9.

In a news release, Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon said preliminary autopsy results have shown no foul play is suspected in the death of Richard Moon III, who was found deceased and hanging from a bridge on Washington Pike Road. Auglaize County Coroner Thomas Freytag has released Moon’s cause of death as being postural or positional asphyxia.

“There were no injuries,” Freytag said in a news release. “It looks like he died because he couldn’t breathe.”

Solomon said there was nothing found during the autopsy or at the scene to indicate anything other than Moon got his foot caught on the bridge support, fell off the bridge and was hanging for a period of time.

“This case is still under investigation by the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office and Auglaize County Coroner,” Solomon said. “However, we are not finding anything to suggest anything other than an accidental fall from a bridge and Mr. Moon’s foot becoming lodged.”

Solomon notes his office and the Auglaize County Coroner’s Office are still waiting on results of the toxicology performed at time of autopsy.
