MINSTER —  The Wapakoneta ACME baseball team spit on the knuckleballs dancing out of the strike zone and waited on the fastball.

The Redskins know what to do with fastballs over the plate.

Wapakoneta had 13 hits and scored in every inning to run-rule Minster 12-2 on Tuesday in ACME district action at Hanover Street Park.

“We challenged the kids to step it up to the next level and attack the baseball,” Wapakoneta ACME coach Willie Sammetinger said. “When (Devon) Poeppelman couldn’t get that breaking ball over, we sat on the fastball and it was right there for us.”

Wapak’s Marshall Gerlach went 4 for 4 with two runs scored and a run batted in. Brandon Schreiber was 3 for 4 with three runs batted in, and Alex Koch went 2 for 4 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Wapakoneta advances to Friday’s game against the winner of the teams left in the bottom of the bracket with one loss.

Wapakoneta junior to-be Chace Culver earned his second win in his second start of the ACME postseason. Culver pitched five innings, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out six and walking three.

Minster will play the winner of Wednesday’s Anna-Fort Loramie game on Thursday. The winner of that Thursday game will play Wapakoneta, needing to beat the Redskins twice to advance to the best-of-three series against the team that emerges from the Mercer-Van Wert Counties district tournament being played at Coldwater this week.
