ST. MARYS — Area residents looking to score a deal and to help a county agency can check out an annual garage sale that kicks off Thursday.
The Auglaize County Council on Aging is holding its annual garage sale — a fundraiser to help the agency with the multiple activities and services it offers throughout the year.
“The garage sale starts the 18th and goes through the 26th,” ACCA Activities Director Evelyn Hartley said. “Most of the items are donated by seniors from around the county.”
The items, which span the majority of the center on Indiana Avenue, vary, she said.
“I have lots of clothes and blankets and coats,” Hartley said. “I have a lot of miscellaneous stuff.”
She noted there is not a lot of furniture, but she does have some chairs and pillows and things.
“I think a lot of people were downsizing this year,” she said. “There are a lot of knickknacks, dishes, trinkets. There is lots of Christmas stuff and Christmas villages.”
The hours for this year’s sale vary by day. It is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and then all next week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“On the 24th, we have a BOGO day,” she said. “We give them bags, and for all the clothes they can fit into the bag, it’s $2 a bag.”
The next day, Aug. 25, is also a sale day.
“On Thursday the 25th, we’ll have $1 for one bag of clothes or whatever else you can put in it,” Hartley said.
That Friday rounds out the garage sale, with another special sale day.
“On the 26th, which is our last day of the sale, it’s CC day — cash and carry,” she said. “You just carry what it is you want, and we have a donation basket there, and you put in a donation and carry the items out.”
What doesn’t go, Hartley said, will be donated.
“I’ll get a hold of the Salvation Army, and there’s another place out in Van Wert,” she said. “There’s also a ministry that donates things like coats to homeless shelters in Dayton and in Columbus.”
Hartley said she has been involved with the sale for the last six years, but it has lasted for approximately 10 years.
“It does keep growing,” she said. “It’s been kind of a rough time — people are having a hard time. We try to reach out to the community.”
The sale, she noted, is a fundraiser for the agency.
“We’ve been cut just like any other place,” she said. “This is a big fundraiser for us that we try to do once a year to give back to our seniors.”
The money raised from the ACCA Annual Garage Sale is used toward the seniors’ trips, for Christmas outings and for a senior and staff day held at the lake, as well as for other entertainment Hartley brings into the center.
“A lot of it goes toward activities, but it’s used for other things, too,” Hartley said.
