6 Injured in U.S. 33 Crash

June 21, 2013

This tan Chevy Lumina owned by Terence K. Kaiser, 46, of Celina, was eastbound in the westbound lane of U.S. 33 colliding head on with a small bus Friday morning.

ST. MARYS — A wrongway driver collided with a bus in the westbound lane of U.S. 33 near St. Marys Friday morning in a collision that injured six people.

According to a report from the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, at approximately 8:23 a.m. Friday, Terence K. Kaiser, 46, of Celina, exited the westbound rest area in the wrong direction in a 1994 tan Chevy Lumina when the vehicle collided with a westbound 2003 White Ford E-450 bus driven by Jason M. Germann, 38, of Wapakoneta, just east of the westbound rest area near Glynwood-New Knoxville Road.

The bus, owned by We Can Too Opportunity Center, was transporting four special needs passengers. The Lumina struck the bus head-on, causing the Lumina to travel off the north side of the road before coming to rest. The bus rotated and came to rest in the road, blocking both lanes of westbound traffic.

All five occupants in the van were transported to Joint Township District Memorial Hospital by the St. Marys Fire and Rescue squad. Kaiser was also transported to Joint Township, but was later transferred to St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.

Westbound traffic on U.S. 33 was closed for approximately an hour. All injuries appeared to be non-life threatening as seat belts usage is believed to have minimized the injuries. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the collision.

Kaiser received a citation for failing to obey a traffic control device and the collision remains under investigation.

The St. Marys Police Department, St. Marys Fire Department, Wapakoneta Fire Department, Buckland Fire Department and the Auglaize County EMA assisted on the scene.
