4 Riders advance to district track finals

FOSTORIA — A pair of St. Marys boys hurdlers  and two distance runners qualified for Friday’s running finals at the Division II district meet at Fostoria with their performances on Wednesday.

St. Marys junior Luke Lemmerman qualified for the 110 meter hurdles finals with the second-best qualifying time of 15.68 seconds.

Roughrider senior Brennan Brown qualified fifth for the boys 300 meter hurdles final.

St. Marys senior Alex Mielke will run in the finals of the 1600 meter run after he finished 15th (4:56.6) in the preliminaries.

Minster's title run ended by Crestview

COLDWATER — During the Minster baseball team’s back-to-back state title runs and 15 straight postseason victories the past three seasons, they’ve consistently emerged from tough postseason situations on some of the state’s biggest stages.

A seven-run first-inning deficit against a pitcher going the way Crestview’s Damian Helm was mowing down hitters proved to be the one road stop to the Wildcats’ potential third straight run at a championship.

Minster, Wapak softball bow out of district tournaments

WAPAKONETA — The resilient Hardin Northern Polar Bears defeated the Minster softball team  3-2 with a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the Division IV district semifinal at Wapakoneta.

Riders fall in season finale at Shawnee

SHAWNEE  TOWNSHIP — The St. Marys baseball team cruised through four and a half innings with a 1-0 lead before Shawnee abruptly changed everything with a six-run fifth inning.

Cory Wilder hit a backbreaking three-run home run in the fifth and three Shawnee pitchers held St. Marys to one run in Shawnee’s 6-1 win over the Roughriders on Monday.

St. Marys tennis doubles team will move on to district

The St. Marys doubles team of Cole Brooks and Jason Freewalt finished fourth at the Division II sectional tournament at UNOH on Saturday after a pair of losses to Celina teams.

Brooks and Freewalt had already assured themselves of a district berth earlier in the week with three wins.

In the semifinals, the St. Marys duo lost to Celina’s Isaac Elston and Kris LeJeune, 2-6, 2-6.  

Brooks and Freewalt lost the third-place match to Celina’s Aaron Seibel and Keaton Mohler, 1-6, 2-6.

Lemmerman, Heitkamp win WBL track titles

BATH TOWNSHIP — The St. Marys boys and girls track teams had two crowned Western Buckeye League champions and the girls team turned in a fourth-place finish that had St. Marys head coach Kathy Sites beaming.

The Riders’ Kelly Heitkamp set a new school record in the pole vault by clearing 10 feet, eight inches to win the WBL title.

St. Marys’s Luke Lemmerman captured the 110-meter hurdles championship with a 16-second flat time.

“They both wanted it so bad,” Sites said. “They deserved that.”

League change, reorganization upcoming for St. Marys youth football

The organizers of St. Marys’ youth football programs say a league change and  reorganization will assure every boy in St. Marys will have the opportunity to play football, no longer held back by weight or roster restrictions that previously kept about a dozen kids off the field each fall.

Minster's Niemeyer strikes out 18 in no-hit masterpiece

MINSTER —  Adam Niemeyer has another gear to kick into for the postseason.

The Minster senior pitched his first high school no-hitter and struck out 18 Marion Local batters in an overpowering performance as the state’s top-ranked Wildcats beat the Flyers 4-0 in a Division IV sectional title game on Wednesday.

A season after he was limited in his pitching during the tournament because of arm issues, the Ohio State signee returned to tournament action on the mound with a gem.

St. Marys girls track team gets a pair of 3rd place finishes at WBL meet

LIMA — The St. Marys girls track team received two third-place finishes on the first day of the Western Buckeye League championship meet at Bath Stadium on Wednesday.

The St. Marys girls 3200 meter relay team of Kristen Dammeyer, Lexi Grothause, Tarin Tischler and Amanda Dues finished third with a 10:03.91 time.

St. Marys’ Mariah Heffner finished third in the girls discus throw with a throw of 114 feet, eight inches.

St. Henry upends Minster with seven-run 5th inning

MINSTER — The St. Henry Redskins’ big comeback denied Minster a chance to wrap up a share of the Midwest Athletic Conference title on Monday night.

The Redskins roared back from a late three-run deficit with seven runs in the top of the fifth inning to defeat the Wildcats 8-6 in a MAC showdown.
