WAPAKONETA — The St. Marys wrestling team split a pair of Western Buckeye League matches on Thursday, defeating Van Wert, 40-33, while taking a 51-24 loss Wapakoneta.

FORT RECOVERY — Too many turnovers towards the end with a precarious lead likely ended the Rangers’ hopes of a Midwest Athletic Conference title and overshadowed what was otherwise a strong performance on the road against one of the state’s best.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Riders win get first WBL win

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys girls basketball team earned its first Western Buckeye League win, a 34-27 victory over Defiance on Thursday night at Murotech Court.

Ashleigh Falk scored a team-high 13 points and Kelly Heitkamp added 12 points to lead the Riders to their third win of the season.

St. Marys led 15-14 at the half before outscoring the Bulldogs 9-7 in the third quarter and 10-6 in the fourth quarter.

Megan Sewell led Defiance with 16 points.

St. Marys improved to 3-12, 1-5 in the WBL.

NEW KNOXVILLE — New Knoxville heads into one of the biggest games of its season on a winning streak spanning six weeks that has kept the Rangers' hopes of  a Midwest Athletic Conference title and top-seeding in the Division IV sectional tournament going strong.

Top-ranked Ottoville at Minster GBB rescheduled for Feb. 18

The Ottoville at Minster girls basketball game, which was postponed on Saturday, has been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m.

Ottoville is the No. 1 -ranked team in the state of Ohio in Division IV.

JACKSON CENTER — The New Bremen boys basketball team took too long to match stride with unbeaten Jackson Center.

A 17-1 Tiger run that started late in the first quarter and lasted into the second quarter proved to be a key stretch for Jackson Center in a 64-55 win over New Bremen on Saturday night in front of a packed house at Jackson Center.

NEW KNOXVILLE 57, JACKSON CENTER 42

JACKSON CENTER —  New Knoxville’s balanced scoring proved to be more potent than the one-woman show that was Jackson Center’s Brooke Richard.

A trio of Rangers scored in double figures in New Knoxville’s 57-42 win over Jackson Center on Saturday afternoon.

Paige Lehman led the way with 18 points, Meg Reineke added 13 points and Haley Horstman had 12 points in the win.

ST. MARYS — Celina caught fire from the field, and the Roughriders were left to reach for their hips in fatigue and for their heads in bewilderment at just how quickly things got away from them in the third quarter on Friday night.

BOYS BASKETBALL: New Bremen fends off St. Henry, 53-49

NEW BREMEN — The New Bremen Cardinals basketball team recovered from a poor third quarter and with the help of rebounds and just enough free throws  down the stretch they held on to defeat the St. Henry Redskins 53-49 Friday evening in a MAC contest at New Bremen.

“We made it a lot tougher than it needed to be down the stretch,” Cardinals head coach Adam Dougherty said.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Ft. Recovery too much for Minster

FT. RECOVERY — A dominant second half propelled Ft. Recovery to a 56-32 victory over fellow Midwest Athletic Conference foe Minster on Friday night.

“They’ve got a lot of weapons on the floor, but when we went dry, (things got bad),” said Minster head coach Mike Lee. “It’s a lot easier putting that thing up when you’re up 10, 12, 14 as opposed to a one, two possession game. They have an outstanding basketball team.”
