COLDWATER — The New Bremen Cardinals survived a rough second quarter and made their free throws down the stretch to advance in the Division IV sectional tournament with a 64-55 victory over the Fort Recovery Indians at Coldwater. The Cardinals (13-8) will advance to the sectional championship on Friday at 8:00 against the Ada Bulldogs. Carson Manger led the Cardinals with 21 points and nine rebounds and Nolan Fox had 14 points.

St. Marys stays in first place in the Western Buckeye League as Isaac Fitzgerald scores 18 second-half points, Quinn Zaerr had 12 points and Josh Young scored 11 points in the WBL win. Andrew Renner had 17 points for Bath.

Delphos St. John's 67, New Knoxville 61

Adam Howe scored a game-high 24 points for New Knoxville, but the Rangers fell short against the Blue Jays, who were led by Odenweller's 23 points and Conley's 19 points.

Wapak tops New Knoxville 45-43

NEW KNOXVILLE — The Wapakoneta Redskins are no strangers to games going down to the wire during this 2014-2015 season. The latest win was yet another instance of the Redskins coming through in the end.

Wapak’s Kodi Morgan knocked down a game-winning jumper with 13 seconds left to give the Wapakoneta boys basketball team a 45-43 victory at New Knoxville on Tuesday night.

“We’ve played in a lot of close games this year,” Redskins head coach Doug Selvey said. “I think those games helped us win this game tonight.”

Rider wrestling heads into WBL championships at 5-4

SHAWNEE — The St. Marys wrestling team lost a pair of close Western Buckeye League matches at the Shawnee super tri on Tuesday night to wrap up regular-season league action. In both cases, the Bulldogs got the better of the Roughriders. St. Marys fell to Elida 44-27 in the opening match. Defiance then won the final two weight with pins to turn a close match into a 43-30 win over the Roughriders.

St. Marys wraps up WBL matches at 5-4 heading into the Feb. 7 WBL Championships at Ottawa-Glandorf. St. Marys is next in action on Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Elmwood duals.

Riders stay atop the WBL with 61-49 win over Elida

ST. MARYS — Call it a lake effect on the Western Buckeye League boys basketball title race.

It’s now St. Marys and Celina sitting atop the standings a third of the way into the league season.

Sophomore Derek Jay scored a season-high 28 points, the Roughriders knocked down 24-of-27 free throws and the St. Marys boys basketball team pulled away from Elida for a 61-49 Western Buckeye League win on Friday night at Memorial High School.

KENTON — The St. Marys boys basketball team has been playing some great defense as of late — notably holding three of their last four opponents to 45 or fewer points going into Friday night’s game at Kenton.

The Roughriders took their defensive effort to a new level against the Wildcats. St. Marys shut down leading scorer Austin Phillips, knocked down 10 three-pointers and romped to a 60-24 road league win.
