NEW BREMEN 64, FORT RECOVERY 55
COLDWATER — The New Bremen Cardinals survived a rough second quarter and made their free throws down the stretch to advance in the Division IV sectional tournament with a 64-55 victory over the Fort Recovery Indians at Coldwater. The Cardinals (13-8) will advance to the sectional championship on Friday at 8:00 against the Ada Bulldogs. Carson Manger led the Cardinals with 21 points and nine rebounds and Nolan Fox had 14 points.
NEW BREMEN — New Bremen’s hopes of winning the school’s first-ever Midwest Athletic Conference baseball title slipped away in the sixth inning of a 4-2 loss to Parkway on Saturday morning in a resumed game from May 4.
New Bremen needed to defeat Parkway in the conclusion of their May 4 game to clinch the school’s first-ever title.
The Cardinals and Panthers played five innings tied 1-1 when lightning suspended the game. Saturday they completed the game.
LIMA — The St. Marys doubles team of Cole Brooks and Troy Newlove took third and advanced to the district level in the Division II sectional at UNOH on Saturday.
Newlove and Brooks, who advanced into the semifinals with a pair of wins on Thursday, won the third-place match against Celina’s Isaac Elston and Kris LeJeune with a marathon tiebreaker win in the second set, 7-5, 7-5 (15-13).
Newlove and Brooks lost their semifinal round match against Derek Smith and Jason Barton of Shawnee, 2-6, 6-4, 4-6.
NEW BREMEN — It was the Minster Wildcat boys team and the Versailles Tiger girls team that came home with the first-place trophies in the annual Midwest Athletic Conference track meet held Friday at New Bremen.
ST. MARYS — Senior Harle Smith of the St. Marys softball team sent the Riders out with a bang Thursday evening. Smith was 3 for 3 with a walk. She had two two-run doubles and a grand slam and she scored twice as the Riders defeated the Spencerville Bearcats 15-5 in five innings.
The Riders had three seniors on the team. Kiley Schamp, Harle Smith and Hannah Wurmer all contributed for the Riders this season.
Spencerville got the scoring underway with three runs in the first inning.
SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — An early lead got away from the St. Marys baseball team in slow motion — just like the cotton candy pitches of Shawnee reliever Kyle Miller entering and disappearing from the hitting zone.
Shawnee chipped away at St. Marys’ lead one run at a time while the Roughriders couldn’t figure out a way to add insurance runs against the soft-tossing of Miller.
It meant a quick tournament exit for a Roughrider team that won 17 games this season.
MINSTER — Austin Knapke is no ordinary number three in a rotation.
Minster's senior starter got the ball with injuries afflicting the Wildcats' top two starters and tossed a five-inning no-hitter in Minster's 10-0 win over Fort Recovery in a Division IV sectional title game.
