NEW BREMEN 64, FORT RECOVERY 55
COLDWATER — The New Bremen Cardinals survived a rough second quarter and made their free throws down the stretch to advance in the Division IV sectional tournament with a 64-55 victory over the Fort Recovery Indians at Coldwater. The Cardinals (13-8) will advance to the sectional championship on Friday at 8:00 against the Ada Bulldogs. Carson Manger led the Cardinals with 21 points and nine rebounds and Nolan Fox had 14 points.
MINSTER — Jay Eilerman and the Minster ACME baseball team did almost everything needed to move on in the district tournament in just the first inning.
Eilerman threw a no-hop strike from centerfield 275 feet away to a spot near the plate to gun down a Fort Loramie baserunner, and he then doubled and tripled in the first inning to spearhead a seven-run top of the first for Minster.
The Wildcats’ pitching took it from there in Minster’s 7-3 win over Fort Loramie on Thursday night at Hanover Street Park.
MIDWAY, Utah — Michael Schmitmeyer shot a four-over par in the second round of the United States Golf Association’s Public Links Championship on Tuesday at Soldier Hollow Golf Course.
Schmitmeyer, a St. Marys Memorial and University of Findlay grad, finished tied for 77th. His six-over part two-day total was two shots off the pace needed to qualify for the match play portion of the event.
MINSTER — Wapakoneta strolled through most of the Auglaize County sectional ACME baseball tournament without using its best available pitcher.
When top-seeded Wapak finally pulled its ace out of the back pocket, Chace Culver was unhittable.
Culver threw five no-hit innings and reliever Dominic Campos finished off the shutout with two scoreless innings as Wapakoneta wrapped up the Auglaize County sectional ACME title with a 7-0 win over Minster on Friday night.
HAMILTON — Spencer Rohr gave the Grand Lake offense a boost in his third game with the team and Preston Zachrich continued his solid summer on the mound as the Mariners downed the Hamilton Joes 7-1 on Friday night at Foundation Field.
Rohr, a New Bremen graduate and University of Dayton outfielder, delivered a pair of RBI hits and was 2 for 5 with a run scored. Rohr singled in a run in the first inning and added an RBI double in the eighth inning.
MINSTER — Minster’s Devon Poeppelman threw a complete game against St. Marys for the second time in four days and the Minster ACME baseball team assured itself of a trip to the district tournament next week with a 6-1 victory over the Roughriders on Thursday night.
