STATE DIVING: St. Marys' Taylor finishes 15th in state

CANTON — St. Marys sophomore Madison Taylor made the most of her opportunity at the state diving championships, making it past both of the cuts and finishing 15th in the Division II girls competition at Canton McKinley’s venerable C.T. Branin Natatorium on Wednesday morning.

“I just feel honored to make it through all the cuts with it being my first year, it’s just awesome,” said Taylor, draped in a towel on the deck of the pool after the completion of the more than three-hour competition.

Fledderjohann hits 1,000 point mark, goes for 40 pts. in loss to Van Wert

ST. MARYS — Garet Fledderjohann wasn’t content to just score his 1,000th point in his next-to-last home game at Memorial High School. The St. Marys senior guard put on a fourth-quarter display that had an entire gymnasium gawking during the Riders’ 60-52 loss to Van Wert on Friday night.

DELPHOS — With a four-point lead with just 16 seconds left in regulation the New Bremen boys basketball team had at least a share of the Midwest Athletic Conference title in its grasp. Delphos St. John’s Curtis Geise’s heroics and later a technical foul at an inopportune time let it slip away.

Friday Sports Round-Up: Deubler 2nd at district swim meet, Riders 7th at sectional bowling

BOWLING GREEN —  St. Marys junior Jared Deubler had a pair of top eight finishes — including a second-place finish —  as an individual to highlight the St. Marys swim team’s day in the pool at the Division II district meet at Bowling Green State University on Friday.

Deubler took second in the boys 100 backstroke. Deubler finished in 54.63 seconds. Deubler also finished eighth in the boys 100 freestyle with a 49.47-second time.

New Knoxville earns piece of MAC championship with 2nd half rally past Cavs

COLDWATER — The New Knoxville girls basketball team didn’t wait its turn to get a share of a Midwest Athletic Conference title.

Even with a roster without a single senior that’s likely to make the Rangers the conference favorite for 2013-2014, when the opportunity to earn the MAC championship presented itself  this winter No. 11-ranked New Knoxville seized the moment.

Thursday Girls Hoops Round-Up: Cougars down Roughriders, Cardinals rally past DSJ

VAN WERT — Van Wert outscored the St. Marys girls basketball team 18-2 in the third quarter and went on to capture a 45-27 victory over the Roughriders on Thursday night .

LeeAnn Bertke led the Roughriders in scoring for the second straight game with 12 points.

St. Marys finished the regular season with a 3-19 record and a 2-7 mark in Western Buckeye League play. The Roughriders have lost six straight games.

Charlson to race at Daytona on Saturday in ARCA series

Just days after his 18th birthday  last year New Bremen’s Drew Charlson made an impressive debut at Daytona International Speedway with a second-place finish in just his second start on the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) series.

Charlson, now 19, is gunning for a win at the fabled Florda raceway this year.

Charlson returns to race at Daytona this weekend in the Lucas Oil 200. The race, in its 50th season, will be televised live on SPEED Channel on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

St. Marys diver Madison Taylor qualifies for state

BOWLING GREEN — St. Marys sophomore Madison Taylor is headed to state after finishing second at the Division II district diving meet at Bowling Green State University on Wednesday.

Taylor scored a 359.25 to place second and advance to the state meet on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

The St. Marys swim team will be sending 10 competitors to the district meet on Friday and Saturday.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2003

This week in 2003, the St. Marys Lady Roughriders concluded their regular season at 16-4 overall with a 51-39 win over the Lima Central Catholic Thunderbirds, who ended their campaign with a 15-5 record.  

The Thunderbirds enjoyed a tight 12-10 advantage at the conclusion of the first quarter, before the Roughriders outscored them by eight in the second period to take a 22-16 lead at the break.  

St. Marys stuns No. 4 Ottawa-Glandorf

OTTAWA — The St. Marys boys basketball team found its signature victory in one of the toughest places to win in the Western Buckeye League.

St. Marys senior Austin James hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds and the Roughriders stunned No. 4-ranked Ottawa-Glandorf 49-48 on Friday night at The Supreme Court.

“It was a great win,” St. Marys head coach Dan Hegemier said. “Our kids really needed this. They’ve played so well in parts of so many games and we put it together for the entire game.”
