ST. MARYS — The fourth quarter started so promising for the St. Marys football team, but it was Kenton that dominated the final 10 minutes of what had been a Western Buckeye League defensive struggle.
The Roughriders held Kenton’s five-wide spread attack in check for more than three quarters and the Roughrider offense drove the field to give St. Marys a brief one-point early fourth-quarter lead, but a barrage of three touchdowns in less than four minutes lifted Kenton to a 26-7 win.

A two score deficit proved to be too much to overcome for the St. Marys football team in the fourth quarter after play resumed on Saturday afternoon. Shawnee handed the Roughriders a 34-20 loss in a Western Buckeye League opener.

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys football team gathered on the home sideline, their helmets held high from outstretched arms. They sang at the top of their lungs after slaying a 21-game losing streak with a 71-21 dismantling of the Sidney Yellow Jackets.
For most of the players it was the first time they’d ever celebrated a varsity football win. For Doug Frye, the moment encapsulated why he returned to the home sideline at Skip Baughman Stadium to coach the Roughriders.
