BASEBALL: Riders win 18th game, New Bremen beat Spencerville

FORT RECOVERY — The St. Marys boys baseball team clinched the most wins for a Roughrider baseball team in a season in 10 years with a 9-1 win at Fort Recovery on Thursday.

The Riders’ Nick Vogel went 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple and six runs batted in. He also started the game on the mound and earned the win.

Codie Deaton finished the game in relief.

D.J. Manning went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Adam Neal went 2-for-4 wiht a double and a run batted in, Michael Huber finished the game 2-for-4.

SOFTBALL: Riders go out with a win, Minster holds off Marion Local

ST. MARYS — Senior Harle Smith of the St. Marys softball team sent the Riders out with a bang Thursday evening. Smith was 3 for 3 with a walk. She had two two-run doubles and a grand slam and she scored twice as the Riders defeated the Spencerville Bearcats 15-5 in five innings.

The Riders had three seniors on the team. Kiley Schamp, Harle Smith and Hannah Wurmer all contributed for the Riders this season.

Spencerville got the scoring underway with three runs in the first inning.

DIV. II BASEBALL: Shawnee rallies past St. Marys for sectional title

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — An early lead got away from the St. Marys baseball team in slow motion — just like the cotton candy pitches of Shawnee reliever Kyle Miller entering and disappearing from the hitting zone.

Shawnee chipped away at St. Marys’ lead one run at a time while the Roughriders couldn’t figure out a way to add insurance runs against the soft-tossing of Miller.

It meant a quick tournament exit for a Roughrider team that won 17 games this season.

DIV. IV BASEBALL: Minster get no-hitter from Knapke, Bremen bows out

MINSTER —  Austin Knapke is no ordinary number three in a rotation.

Minster's senior starter got the ball with injuries afflicting the Wildcats' top two starters and tossed a five-inning no-hitter in Minster's 10-0 win over Fort Recovery in a Division IV sectional title game.

WAPAKONETA — The Western Buckeye League championship meet ran preliminaries along with field event finals and the 3200 meter relay final on Wednesday at Wapakoneta’s Harmon Field.

St. Marys turned in four top-five finishes at the league meet’s first day.

St. Marys’ Erin Kinkley finished fourth in the high jump (5-0) and Ashleigh Falk was fifth (4-8).

TRACK: Minster has five crowned champs on first day of MAC meet

NEW BREMEN — Minster crowned five Midwest Athletic Conference champions on the first day of the conference’s track championships.

The Minster boys are out to an early lead in the team standings with 62 points, while the Minster girls (35.5 points) are in second behind Versailles (47 points).

Tuesday Winners

Minster’s Kayla Wuebker earned another Midwest Athletic Conference title in the pole vault, clearing 12 feet.

Minster’s Paul Dues won the boys high jump, clearing six feet.

SOFTBALL: St. Henry downs New Bremen in sectional final

NEW BREMEN — The New Bremen softball team ended its season losing to St. Henry 9-2 in the Division IV sectional finals.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Redskins cracked the scoreboard first when lead off batter, Ashley Heitkamp infield singled. Heitkamp then stole second and third and scored when Kinzie Stammen grounded out an RBI to third base.

The Cardinals offense tied the game up when senior, Kristen Miller had an RBI single to send classmate, Taylor Carter home.  

BASEBALL: New Bremen a win away from MAC title, Minster upended by Flyers

FORT RECOVERY — Good defense and clutch pitching from Aaron Clune allowed the New Bremen Cardinals to emerge from Fort Recovery with a 3-1 victory and moved the Cardinals a win on Saturday away from at least a share of the Midwest Athletic Conference title.

The victory allowed the Cardinals to remain tied for the MAC lead with a 6-2 record. Overall they are 12-8. Fort Recovery drops to 7-15 and 1-8 in the MAC.

Clune pitched the complete game victory for New Bremen giving up one unearned run on four hits. He struck out three and walked one.

Seventeen St. Marys students named academic All-WBL

The Western Buckeye League named its 2011-2012 WBL Academic All-League award winners late last week for student-athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom.

St. Marys had 17 students earn the honor.

Juniors must carry a 3.75 grade point average and earned at least two varsity letters.

St. Marys juniors Emily Brown, Kevin Dammeyer, Nick Durkee, Mitch Fowler, Kelly Heitkamp, Colleen Magee, Neil Perry and Logan Simons were named to the list.

Seniors must carry a 3.75 GPA with at least three varsity letters in WBL sports.

Softball tournament game moved to Tuesday; St. Marys, Minster and New Bremen baseball play Wednesday

NEW BREMEN — Late afternoon storms postponed the Division IV sectional softball final  between New Bremen and St. Henry scheduled for Monday.

The Cardinals and Redskins will play tonight at 5 p.m. at New Bremen. The winner advances to the district tournament at Wapakoneta on Tuesday, May 15 against the winner of Ada and Hardin Northern.

St. Henry won the regular season match-up 10-0 on April 19.

Minster will play in district action at Wapak on Wednesday, May 16 at 5 p.m. against the wnner of today’s Lima Perry-Ridgemont game.
