MINSTER — Four runs in the first inning by the Fort Recovery Indians was all they needed as they defeated the New Knoxville baseball team 4-1 in the opening game of the Division IV sectional tournament held at Hanover Street Park in Minster.

St. Henry defeated Marion Local 1-0 in the second game despite being no-hit until the seventh inning. Second-seeded New Bremen will face the Redskins this week in a sectional final.

BASEBALL: Minster pulls out MAC win over St. Henry in 11 innings on Friday

May 4, 2012

ST. HENRY — Minster’s foray into Friday night extra innings  produced a happier ending this time thanks to a pair of home runs and a relief appearance from Austin Knapke that had the length of a start.

A week after losing in 15 innings in a Midwest Athletic Conference contest at Coldwater, Minster emerged with a win from a double-digit inning affair against another Mercer County MAC foe.

On a day Minster (19-5, 6-2 MAC) otherwise struggled to hit the ball, it was a pair of home runs that got the job done.

BASEBALL: Huber's homers lead Riders to win on Thursday night

May 4, 2012

MARIA STEIN — As the clean-up hitter in the St. Marys line-up, Michael Huber looked out at the flag in center field whipping directly out and saw the opportunity for a big day.

“As a hitter, I was definitely excited,” he said.

Huber said the wind helped him on the hill, too.

The Rider senior hit two home runs — including a seventh-inning grand slam — and pitched six strong innings in St. Marys’ 8-2 win over Marion Local on Thursday.

BASEBALL: Minster picks up fifth MAC win over New Knoxville, stays in MAC race

May 3, 2012

MINSTER — Minster’s early offensive explosion accomplished a few things.

Taking a 9-0 lead through three innings allowed the Wildcats to coast to a 10-0 win over New Knoxville on Wednesday night in the resumption of a rain postponement from the night before.

The big lead also let Minster head coach Mike Wiss get his pitching staff lined up for next week’s tournament, a glaring need with rainouts and a scarcity of games left to let his deep and talented pitching staff get its work in.

WAPAKONETA —  Sometimes it’s not the team that makes the most plays that comes out on top.  Sometimes it’s the one that makes the fewest mistakes.

Friday night, that team was the St. Marys Roughriders.

St. Marys took advantage of a slew of miscues in the first three innings to post a 5-1 win over the rival Wapakoneta Redskins in a Western Buckeye League varsity baseball game at Wapakoneta High School.
