Thursday Sports Round-Up: New Knoxville earns win over Anna

BASEBALL: NEW KNOXVILLE 6, ANNA 4

NEW KNOXVILLE — The New Knoxville baseball team scored in each of the first five innings of the game in a 6-4 win over Anna on Thursday night.

Jake Allen and Spencer Wolf each went 3-for-4 at the plate for New Knoxville. Adam Howe was 2-for-2. Wes Meyer went 2-for-3.

Howe started the game and earned the win on the mound. Jake Allen came on in relief for the save.

SOFTBALL: ST. HENRY 4, ST. MARYS 3

ST. HENRY — St. Henry erased the St. Marys softball team’s 3-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Redskins kept the score right there and defeated the Roughriders 4-3 on Monday night.

St. Marys led 1-0 heading into the top of the fourth. The Riders added a run in the fourth when Tannar Rutschilling reached on a fielder’s choice, Carly Carnes walked and Kiley Schamp hit a ball back up through the box for an RBI single.

BASEBALL: Minster rolls in game at Fifth Third Field in Dayton

DAYTON — Minster shook off a vulnerable first half inning in the field and got back to its winning ways in the plush surroundings of a professional ballpark.

TRACK: Minster boys capture Memorial title (with photo gallery)

MINSTER — The Minster boys track team won the Minster Memorial Invitational on Saturday, distancing itself from the rest of the 14-team field with 165 points on a soggy day. New Bremen finished fifth, St. Marys took seventh and New Knoxville was 14th in the boys standings.

The Minster girls team finished second to first-place Versailles (116 points) with 105 points. New Bremen finished seventh, St. Marys was ninth and New Knoxville took 15th in the 16-team girls event.

BASEBALL: Riders rally past Elida, Minster beats New Bremen 1-0

ST. MARYS 6, ELIDA 4

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys baseball team again found a way to deliver in the clutch in the late innings.

The Roughriders won their second last at-bat win in as many nights with three runs in the top of the seventh to rally past the Elida Bulldogs 6-4 on Friday night.

St. Marys improved to 9-4, 3-1 in the Western Buckeye League.

Steven Paulus went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs batted to lead the Riders at the plate.

ST. MARYS 12, ELIDA 2

ELIDA — St. Marys’ Harle Smith homered and doubled while driving in four runs as the St. Marys softball team run-ruled the Elida Bulldogs in five innings, 12-2, on Friday night.

Smith collected three hits to lead a nine-hit Roughrider hitting attack.

Shelby Goodwin drove in two runs for St. Marys. Kiley Schamp tripled, had two hits and an RBI. Katlyn Brown and Paige Dicus each added an RBI.

TENNIS: Riders win at every position against Elida

ELIDA — The St. Marys boys tennis team got above .500 in Western Buckeye League play with a 5-0 clean sweep of Elida on Friday night.

“It was our best match as a team throughout the line up this season,” St. Marys head coach Bill Ruane said.

Troy Newlove won first singles for the Roughriders over Elida’s Ardie Sayoto, 6-3, 6-1.

St. Marys’ Cole Brooks won second singles over Elida’s Chris Ellison, 7-5, 6-0.

The Riders’ Jason Freewalt won third singles over Aric Thompson, 6-1, 6-2.

BASEBALL: Riders rally past Lima Senior in extra innings

ST. MARYS — Austin James laced a two-run game-winning double to left in the eighth inning and the St. Marys Roughriders baseball team registered an 11-10 victory against Lima Senior in a non-league game played at K. C. Geiger Park on Thursday.

In the bottom of the eighth the Riders needed a run to tie and they started off well. With one out, Steven Paulus singled to left and Jarrett Taylor walked. Austin James then launched a double to right to bring Paulus and Taylor home to win the game 11-10.

MINSTER 13, JACKSON CENTER 2

JACKSON CENTER — Minster scored seven runs in the first inning and coasted to a 13-2 run-rule victory over Jackson Center on Thursday.

Minster starting pitcher Austin Knapke allowed just two unearned runs in the first inning to earn the victory. He struck out six and didn’t walk any while giving up two hits.
