OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The joy Kent State players and coaches have derived from the program’s first College World Series appearance has been diminished since they arrived because of the unexpected death of backup catcher and former Grand Lake Mariner Jason Bagoly’s mother.
Cheryl McHenry died unexpectedly at age 50 last Thursday, the day after the Golden Flashes arrived in Omaha.
ST. MARYS — The hits were flying around the ball park Tuesday evening for the St. Marys ACME baseball team as it swept a doubleheader from Sidney 16-1 in five innings in the first game and 16-6 in six innings in the second game.
“I think we did pretty well offensively,” St. Marys head coach Alan Huber said. “The kids did well in situational hitting and we had good pitching. Brandon (Coffey) pitched well and Marcus Wagner had a good showing in the second game, but he got a little fatigued and Isaac Fitzgerald came on to finish the game.”
In American Legion baseball this week in 1962, the St. Marys squad played “up” against the St. Marys Lakers, and in a battle which not many expected them to stand a chance; they came away with the 9-8 victory.
The Legion squad led 1-0 after an inning, but found themselves down 6-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth frame. They plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but allowed two more in the seventh to trail 8-3.
