Kyle Busch wins Prelude to the Dream

June 7, 2012

ROSSBURG — If it has an engine, Kyle Busch has a good shot at getting it across the finish line first.

Busch is comfortable in any kind of race car, making his win at Eldora Speedway in the Feed the Children Prelude to the Dream on Wednesday night a natural extension of a strong five-year run at the rural Ohio dirt track.

TRACK & FIELD: Minster boys 4-by-400 meter relay team captures Division III title

June 3, 2012

COLUMBUS — Derek Collins just couldn't help it.

The Minster senior broke into a grin as wide as the lead he had over the next closest competitor with 50 meters left to go on the final leg of the boys 4-by-400 meter relay team.

Minster's championship relay team could savor closing out the Division III state track and field meet with a victory even before the race was over.

TRACK & FIELD: Area athletes excel on first day at state meet

June 2, 2012

COLUMBUS — Not every victory need be accompanied by a rise to the top of the podium at the state track meet.

Sometimes the consistency of a three-year run of excellence like the one Kayla Wuebker completed on Friday or the perseverance to get back to the state meet and excel after a disappointing hiatus like Wapakoneta’s Megan Hayzlett displayed are achievement enough.

STATE BASEBALL NOTEBOOK: Minster back at state with new names, Wapak has a 1-2 punch on mound

May 30, 2012

MINSTER — The Minster baseball team remodeled on the fly.

It’s easy to look at Minster’s return to the state tournament in hindsight as a natural extension of last year’s success, but the Wildcats head back to Columbus with a line-up that looks only vaguely similar to the one that lifted them to their first-ever state baseball championship last June. And it’s a team that dealt with adversity throughout the  2012 season.

Remade and retooled, Minster is looking for another title with a lot of new names on the line-up card.

TRACK & FIELD: St. Marys' Heitkamp headed to state in pole vault

May 26, 2012

LEXINGTON — Kelly Heitkamp, a St. Marys Memorial junior, qualified for the state tournament in the girls pole vault with a third-place finish at the Division II regional meet at Lexington on Saturday.

Heitkamp cleared nine feet, six inches — one of seven vaulters to hit that mark. Heitkamp won the tiebreaker (the vaulters' second-best vaults are compared) to tie for third with Liberty-Benton's Alex Johnson.

Heitkamp will compete at state at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus on Saturday, June 2 at 9 a.m.

SOFTALL: Minster bows out in regional title game

May 26, 2012

TIPP CITY — The Covington Buccs jumped out to an 8-0 lead and held off a late Minster rally for a 9-6 win in a Division IV regional final game at Tipp City Tippecanoe Middle School on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats bow out of the tournament after the longest postseason run in the program's history. Minster ended its season at 23-7.

Minster spotted the Buccs eight runs before bringing the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh.
