MARIETTA — Scott Schnelle helped lift the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears into the Ohio Athletic Conference semifinals with a big second half on Tuesday night.
Schnelle, an Ohio Northern senior and New Bremen grad, either scored or got an assist on 23 straight ONU points in the second half at one point. Schnelle finished the game with a team-high 19 points with six rebounds and four assists.
COLDWATER — The four teams left in the Division IV girls sectional bracket at Coldwater have a combined record of 64-18, and all four teams received votes at some point this season in the Associated Press’ state poll.
That makes for a fun Saturday night at The Palace.
New Knoxville jumped out to an early lead against New Bremen and maintained a double-digit distance in a 51-32 victory in the second game on Tuesday night.
Fort Recovery was state-ranked much of the season and got just the third seed at Coldwater. They’ll face St. Henry, the fifth-seeded team in the sectional despite losing six games by three points or less, tonight at 6:15 p.m.
MINSTER — Top-ranked Ottoville scored its 20th win of the regular season and validated the Division III Associated Press poll championship it won earlier in the week with a 43-36 over Minster in a match-up of two of the best small-school girls basketball programs in Ohio on Saturday.
If a run through the Midwest Athletic Conference gauntlet all season hadn’t prepared the Minster girls basketball team enough, the final two weeks put the Wildcats on the court with two of Ohio’s best in non-conference action.
VAN WERT — Van Wert turned in a strong defensive performance over the final three quarters and used an offensive outburst in the second quarter keyed by a bench player’s breakout night for a 68-43 win over St. Marys on Friday night.
“I just thought our attention to the little things got better and we were able to capitalize when we made them uncomfortable,” Van Wert head coach Dave Froelich said.
Offensively for the Cougars, a bench player was the catalyst.
