NEW BREMEN 64, FORT RECOVERY 55
COLDWATER — The New Bremen Cardinals survived a rough second quarter and made their free throws down the stretch to advance in the Division IV sectional tournament with a 64-55 victory over the Fort Recovery Indians at Coldwater. The Cardinals (13-8) will advance to the sectional championship on Friday at 8:00 against the Ada Bulldogs. Carson Manger led the Cardinals with 21 points and nine rebounds and Nolan Fox had 14 points.
In the biggest upset in the Western Buckeye League of the season, the St. Marys Roughriders upended the unbeaten Coldwater Cavaliers this week in 1962.
The Cavs entered the contest with the league’s best rushing attack and stingiest defense, but the Roughriders ignored all of the hoopla and recorded the 14-6 victory over the Orange and Black, while also snapping their 19-game winning streak.
NEW BREMEN — Trey Naylor's 35-yard field goal proved to be the difference for the New Bremen Cardinals in a 31-28 win over Fort Recovery on Friday night.
“We wanted them to understand that when you play together as a team and you play for each other and handle adversity because everyone has each other’s back that is the kind of thing you can accomplish," Cardinals head coach Jason McGaharan said." I think this team finally understands that when you play as a team you can overcome the kind of start we had tonight.”
ANNA — Minster got off to a quick start after bouncing back from their loss to Coldwater last week in their game against Midwest Athletic opponent Anna Rockets. Minster has never beat Anna and the Wildcats took a commanding halftime lead and picked up the 34-8 MAC victory.
“It was a tough two weeks for us mentally and emotionally draining,” said Minster coach Nate Moore. “I am proud of the way the kids played tonight, they should be happy with the victory.”
Both St. Marys (0-5, 0-4 WBL) and Defiance (1-4, 1-3 WBL) open the second half of the season looking to salvage campaigns that started off roughly in the first five games.
Defiance is 1-4, with its lone win coming against Bath in Week 2. The Bulldogs’ defense is the biggest culprit for the struggles. Defiance is giving up a league-worst 43.6 points per game and 495 yards of offense per game. Defiance gives up 7.9 yards per carry and have surrendered 18 rushing touchdowns.
OTTAWA — St. Marys sophomore Carter Bowman shot a 79 at the Division II sectional at Country Acres to advance to the district tournament on a rainy Thursday.
Van Wert won the sectional title with a 325 team score. The other district qualifiers were Napoleon (321) and Bryan (335). The St. Marys Roughriders finished fifth and shot a 348 as a team. Along with Bowman’s 79, Cobain Applegate shot an 83, Colin Burke shot an 84, Kyle Kiefer had a 92 and Matt Severt shot a 100.
