NEW BREMEN 64, FORT RECOVERY 55
COLDWATER — The New Bremen Cardinals survived a rough second quarter and made their free throws down the stretch to advance in the Division IV sectional tournament with a 64-55 victory over the Fort Recovery Indians at Coldwater. The Cardinals (13-8) will advance to the sectional championship on Friday at 8:00 against the Ada Bulldogs. Carson Manger led the Cardinals with 21 points and nine rebounds and Nolan Fox had 14 points.

BOYS SOCCER: St. Marys holds off Elida to break postseason drought

WAPAKONETA — The St. Marys boys soccer team ended half a decade of postseason frustration with the help of a quick early strike.

Brennan Brown scored 18 seconds into the match, Zac Nelson added a goal on a direct kick and St. Marys held off Elida in a frantic final four minutes to earn a 2-1 win on Thursday in a Division II sectional final at Wapakoneta.

GIRLS SOCCER: St. Marys opens tournament with 5-1 win over Van Wert

CELINA — When a team scores a goal in the first 30 seconds, it’s a pretty good sign.

The St. Marys girls soccer team scored its first goal 29 seconds into the match and rode that momentum to a 5-1 victory over the Van Wert Cougars in the Division II sectional soccer tournament at Celina.

The Riders (13-3-1) will now play Celina next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Celina in a district semifinal match.

One team’s long wait for a first victory will end on Friday when the St. Marys football team treks north to venerable Egress Stadium in Van Wert to face the Cougars.

St. Marys head coach Greg Phillips hopes it’s his team, but the Roughriders’ second-year coach said his team can’t afford to take anyone lightly as his team looks to avoid the school’s first winless season.

50 Years Ago This Week – 1962: This week in 1962, Memorial High School celebrated Homecoming weekend in fashion with a 27-8 victory on the football field over the Van Wert Cougars. 

The Roughriders scored their initial touchdown late in the opening period after receiving a punt near midfield.  On the third play of the series, Terry Young ripped through an opening in the offensive line and raced for the 50-yard touchdown.  Tom Hollman’s PAT run was a success, and the Roughriders were in charge 8-0.

LIMA —  St. Marys’ furious rally to extend its season came up just short in a fifth game.

Defiance won the fourth game and then staved off St. Marys in the deciding fifth to oust the Roughriders from the Division II sectional volleyball tournament on Tuesday at Lima Senior High School with a 21-25, 26-24, 18-25, 25-18, 17-15 win.

BOYS SOCCER: New Knoxville coasts past Lima Temple Christian, 6-1

NEW KNOXVILLE — The New Knoxville boys soccer team played on artificial surface and under unnatural light for the first time all season at Lima Stadium on Monday.

The Rangers looked like naturals in a 6-1 win over Lima Temple Christian in a Division III sectional semifinal.

SOCCER: St. Marys boys and girls soccer teams beat Greenville

With the soccer ball colored pink and the Riders wearing jerseys with pink numbers for the Cure for Cancer match, the St. Marys Roughriders closed the regular season with a 7-0 win over  Greenville on Saturday.

“We did what we had to do to win,” St. Marys head coach Paul Dingledine said.

CROSS COUNTRY: St. Marys has four Top 25 runners at WBL meet

OTTAWA — The St. Marys cross country teams had four top 25 finishers at Saturday’s Western Buckeye League meet at Memorial Park in Ottawa, as the boys finished fifth and the girls took sixth place at the league championships.

The St. Marys girls team had three finishers in the top 25 runners in the girls race.
