College World Series: Former Grand Lake Mariner plays through grief in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The joy Kent State players and coaches have derived from the program’s first College World Series appearance has been diminished since they arrived because of the unexpected death of backup catcher and former Grand Lake Mariner Jason Bagoly’s mother.

Cheryl McHenry died unexpectedly at age 50 last Thursday, the day after the Golden Flashes arrived in Omaha.

ACME Baseball: St. Marys sweeps twin bill over Sidney

ST. MARYS — The hits were flying around the ball park Tuesday evening for the St. Marys ACME baseball team as it swept a doubleheader from Sidney 16-1 in five innings in the first game and 16-6 in six innings in the second game.

“I think we did pretty well offensively,” St. Marys head coach Alan Huber said. “The kids did well in situational hitting and we had good pitching. Brandon (Coffey) pitched well and Marcus Wagner had a good showing in the second game, but he got a little fatigued and Isaac Fitzgerald came on to finish the game.”

ACME Baseball: Big 6th inning lifts St. Marys over Elida, 11-8

The St. Marys’ ACME baseball team’s patient approach paid dividends late in its 11-8 comeback win over Elida on Monday night at K.C. Geiger Park.

St. Marys (5-5) rallied back from a six-run deficit with a nine-run bottom of the sixth inning by getting into Elida’s bullpen.

St. Marys worked the count and got Elida’s effective starter out of the game after four-plus innings.

ATHENS — The Grand Lake Mariners are a game back in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League standings after they split their second doubleheader  in as many days on Sunday.

On Sunday the twin bill was with the Southern Ohio Copperheads at Bob Wren Stadium.

Grand Lake overcame an early six-run deficit and scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to rally past the Copperheads, 7-6, in the nine-inning opener.

ACME Baseball: St. Marys' early runs hold up against New Bremen

NEW BREMEN — The St. Marys ACME baseball team took advantage of its chances to score early and New Bremen couldn’t capitalize on its shots late on Friday night.

St. Marys defeated New Bremen, 4-1, as St. Marys starter Codie Deaton held down the Cardinals offense for six innings.

St. Marys scored all four of its runs in the first two innings. Tyler Rose singled to left to plate two runs Luke Leffel came home on an error to give St. Marys a 3-0 lead.

50 Years Ago This Week – 1962

In American Legion baseball this week in 1962, the St. Marys squad played “up” against the St. Marys Lakers, and in a battle which not many expected them to stand a chance; they came away with the 9-8 victory.  

The Legion squad led 1-0 after an inning, but found themselves down 6-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth frame.  They plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but allowed two more in the seventh to trail 8-3.

WAPAKONETA — What a difference a week makes.

Seven days ago, the Wapakoneta ACME baseball team sent rival St. Marys home with its tail between its legs thanks to a 17-0 shellacking at K.C. Geiger Park.

Thursday at Wapakoneta High School, St. Marys jumped all over Wapak starting pitcher Andrew Hines for four first-inning runs.

But Hines settled down and Wapakoneta chipped away at the St. Marys lead to pull out a 5-4 win.

Wapak improved to 5-0 on the season.  St. Marys is 3-4.

BASEBALL: Kill pitches scoreless 9th in Grand Lake Mariners win

CELINA — A pair of five-run innings by the Grand Lake Mariners allowed them to get by the Cincinnati Steam 11-5 Wednesday in a Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League contest at Jim Hoess Field in Celina.

Trevor Kill, a St. Marys Memorial grad and Southeast Missouri pitcher, worked a scoreless ninth inning with a strikeout to close out the win for Grand Lake.

With a 1-0 lead going into the third inning the Mariners batted around for the first time on the night, scoring five runs. Ryan Blanchard delivered the big blow with a three-run home run.

ACME Baseball: Celina sweeps twin bill against St. Marys

The St. Marys’ ACME baseball team’s early lead was short-lived in the second game of a twi-night doubleheader against Celina.

Southpaw reliever Cody Vogel made sure the Bulldogs’ rally stood up and the Bulldogs’ early-summer success against their rivals continued.

Celina came back from an early three-run deficit to beat St. Marys, 5-4, and secured the twin bill sweep on Tuesday night at K.C. Geiger Park.
