SOFTBALL: 3 Riders on All-WBL softball lists

The St. Marys softball team had three players named to the All-Western Buckeye League softball list released on Monday.

Harle Smith, a St. Marys senior third baseman, earned first team All-WBL honors.

Kiley Schamp, a Roughrider senior centerfielder, was a second team selection.

Lexi Roop, a junior pjitcher, was honorable mention.

Camille Martin of Bath was named the league’s top player.

Bath’s Laura Ford and Nicole Driggs of Celina were co-coaches of the year.

BASEBALL: St. Marys has five named to All-WBL baseball lists

The St. Marys baseball team had five named to the All-Western Buckeye League baseball teams released on Monday.

D.J. Manning, a senior centerfielder and leadoff hitter for the Roughriders, was named to the first team.

St. Marys senior second baseman Michael Huber was named second team All-WBL.

Brad Sawmiller, a senior pitcher and Nick Vogel, a senior shortstop, earned third team All-WBL honors.

St. Marys catcher Steven Paulus was named honorable mention.

TRACK: Riders send individuals to regional, Minster boys and girls track win district titles

FOSTORIA — Erin Kinkley won the Division II district high jump championship at Fostoria on Friday night, punching her ticket for this week’s regional meet.

Kinkley, a St. Marys sophomore, cleared five feet, one inch and won a jump-off to earn the district title.

Kinkley will join St. Marys’ Wednesday regional qualifiers Kelly Heitkamp in the pole vault and the St. Marys girls 3200 meter relay team of Sara Lininger, Lexi Grothause, Kristen Dammeyer and Marissa Schrolucke. at the regional meet in Lexington on Thursday and Saturday.

BASEBALL: Minster wins back-to-back district baseball titles

COLDWATER — The Cardiac Cats did it again.

Minster won its second straight district title with a 4-3 win over Crestview that — in typical Wildcat style this season — came down to a pulsepounding finish in the seventh inning.

“To be able to do this two years in a row, that’s something special,” Minster head coach Mike Wiss said.

SOFTBALL: Minster wins first-ever district softball crown

WAPAKONETA — The Minster softball team could start celebrating — and breathe a big sign of relief — when  pitcher Kayla Richards got Michelle Bruns to fly out to left field giving the Wildcats their first-ever Division IV district softball championship at Wapakoneta on Friday.

Minster used a five-run fifth inning and took advantage of five St. Henry errors to defeat the Redskins 7-5.

SOUTH BEND — Mike Elston says he’s found the perfect home in the collegiate, spiritually-engaging, football-crazy city of South Bend as a defensive assistant and key recruiter for the Fighting Irish.

Elston, one of the driving forces behind St. Marys’ powerhouse football teams of the early 1990s and an all-Ohioan in football, basketball and track for the Roughriders, enters his third season as the defensive line coach at Notre Dame this fall.

A former Michigan man has found Notre Dame to his liking.

TRACK: Minster 3200 meter relay team sets new district record on Thursday

SPENCERVILLE — The Minster boys 3200 meter relay team smashed the Division III district record by four seconds as part of Minster’s strong start on day one of the meet.

The Minster boys team leads the district meet standings with 45 points after the first day. The New Bremen track team is in 11th after the first day with two points.

The Minster girls are in fifth place after the first day with 12 points, highlighted by a win in the girls 3200 meter relay.

OHSAA members say no to competitive balance proposal again

COLUMBUS (AP) — For the second consecutive year, Ohio high schools voted down a proposal that would have addressed the ongoing competitive-balance problems between public and private teams.

An OHSAA bylaw that would have changed how schools are assigned to tournament divisions in the team sports of football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball was voted down 339-301. The results of the vote were announced on Wednesday afternoon.

A similar proposal failed by a 332-303 vote a year ago.

BASEBALL: Minster holds off Spencerville to advance to district title game

MINSTER — The Minster baseball took the adage 'survive and advance' to its uncomfortable limit, but the Wildcats will play for a second straight district title on Friday night.

Minster came back from an early deficit and weathered a nerve-wracking final inning to advance in the Division IV district tournament with a 4-2 win over Spencerville on Wednesday at Coldwater.
