NEW BREMEN 64, FORT RECOVERY 55
COLDWATER — The New Bremen Cardinals survived a rough second quarter and made their free throws down the stretch to advance in the Division IV sectional tournament with a 64-55 victory over the Fort Recovery Indians at Coldwater. Carson Manger led the Cardinals with 21 points and nine rebounds and Nolan Fox had 14 points.
SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Shawnee has just one player taller than 5-foot-7 listed on its roster. Going up against a St. Marys team with six players taller than that, Shawnee planned on disrupting the Riders before they could use that advantage in the half court.
Shawnee’s full-court pressure created 31 turnovers and easy baskets as the Indians opened Western Buckeye League action with a 56-43 win over St. Marys on Thursday.
MINSTER — Minster put the ball in the hands of a cool and collected senior in the closing seconds of the Wildcats’ 55-54 win over Spencerville on Saturday night.
Devon Poeppelman delivered with a post-up, pirouette and powerful finish.
Poeppelman posted up his defender, received the ball from freshman point guard Jacob Stechschulte at the right elbow, drove into the paint and spun leftward towards the basket for the game winner with 3.7 seconds.
ST. MARYS — Fort Recovery held the St. Marys boys basketball team without a point in the second quarter to build a big lead and coast to a 58-43 season-opening win on Murotech Court at the Horseshoe on Friday night.
St. Marys recovered with a strong second half that included 37 points put on the scoreboard, but by then Fort Recovery had a lead that at times reached 20 points.
Fifty years ago this week, the St. Marys Roughriders tipped off boys basketball season with a 55-34 victory over Greenville.
As both teams seemed plagued by season-opening jitters and ice-cold shooting, Greenville led after the first quarter, 8-7 only to have St. Marys out-score them 14-2 in the second period to take a 21-10 lead into the locker room at intermission.
BATH TOWNSHIP — Returning Midwest Athletic Conference player of the year Haley Horstman scored a game-high 20 points and the New Knoxville girls basketball team generated enough offense in the third and fourth quarters to squeeze past the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays 37-34 on Friday in the opening game of the ninth annual Kewpee Tip-Off Classic held at Bath.
