SPENCERVILLE — Derek Goecke’s short jump shot with three seconds left in double overtime proved to be the game winner, as the Bearcats defeated the Minster Wildcats, 55-53, on Friday night.
“We went late to our ball screen action,” Spencerville head coach Kevin Sensabaugh said. “It worked for us because they had trouble defending the ball screen late and we felt we had a little advantage. We asked Eli (Bowers) where he wanted to catch the ball and him and Derek (Goecke) had a two-man game on the weak side and they executed and scored.”
The St. Marys girls basketball team rallied from a 13-point halftime deficit to get its first victory of the season as they defeated the Sidney Lehman Cavaliers 43-39 in comeback fashion at Murotech Court.
MINSTER — Minster got its first win of the season on Thursday night, defeating Lehman 64-53.
Minster started the second quarter on a 10-0 run thanks to four baskets by Ethan Wolf. Wolf finished with 16 points for Minster, while Adam Niemeyer scored 14 and Poeppelman added 13.
“(Wolf is) just a sophomore, but with a lack of physical presence that we have in terms of depth, we need that from him and hopefully this is a confidence builder for him," Lee said.
