OTTAWA — St. Marys sophomore Carter Bowman shot a 79 at the Division II sectional at Country Acres to advance to the district tournament on a rainy Thursday.
Van Wert won the sectional title with a 325 team score. The other district qualifiers were Napoleon (321) and Bryan (335). The St. Marys Roughriders finished fifth and shot a 348 as a team. Along with Bowman’s 79, Cobain Applegate shot an 83, Colin Burke shot an 84, Kyle Kiefer had a 92 and Matt Severt shot a 100.
Fifty years ago this week, the McBroom Junior High eighth grade football team opened their 1962 gridiron season with a disappointing loss to the Celina Bulldogs.
Celina scored a pair of touchdowns in the first half, and despite St. Marys’ defense tightening up the rest of the way, the Roughriders were unable to overcome their deficit and fell by the 14-point decision.
St. Marys 4, Wapak 0: With a key Western Buckeye League match against Ottawa-Glandorf on next week’s horizon, the Roughriders earned a shutout in their fourth straight WBL match and beat rival Wapakoneta 4-0 on Tuesday at the West School soccer field.
After missing so many chances to score and coming up empty against Celina last week in a scoreless tie, St. Marys found the back of the net four times against their rivals to the East.
The St. Marys Roughrider volleyball team put together a strong fifth set and defeated the Greenville Green Wave 20-25, 25-13, 26-24, 21-25 and 15-5 on Monday.
“We started a little slow in the first set,” Riders head coach Tricia Rosenbeck said. “In the second and third sets we started to play more aggressively. In the fourth set we played off and on, but we put everything together in the fifth set.”
ST. MARYS — Celina’s players ran off the field 47-7 victors over St. Marys as the clocktower struck midnight. Many of the Bulldogs looked like they were freshly molded on a potter’s wheel, helmet-to-toe slathered in mud.
The Bulldogs scored 41 unanswered points after a two-hour weather wait — a post-lightning delay doggy paddling on the oozing field of Skip Baughman Stadium.
ST. MARYS 4, DEFIANCE 0: The St. Marys boys soccer team remained unbeaten after a 4-0 win at Defiance on Thursday night. The win pushed the Riders’ record to 7-0-2, 3-0-2 in Western Buckeye League play. Dylan Zink scored a pair of goals for the Roughriders. Zack Wilker and Nathan Wilker added a goal apiece for St. Marys. The Riders host Ottoville on Saturday night at 7 p.m. and then host Wapakoneta on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a WBL match.
