St. Marys at Defiance

Both St. Marys (0-5, 0-4 WBL) and Defiance (1-4, 1-3 WBL) open the second half of the season looking to salvage campaigns that started off roughly in the first five games.

Defiance is giving up a league-worst 43.6 points per game and 495 yards of offense per game. Defiance gives up 7.9 yards per carry and have surrendered 18 rushing touchdowns.

50 Years Ago This Week – 1962

Fifty years ago this week, the McBroom Junior High eighth grade football team opened their 1962 gridiron season with a disappointing loss to the Celina Bulldogs.

Celina scored a pair of touchdowns in the first half, and despite St. Marys’ defense tightening up the rest of the way, the Roughriders were unable to overcome their deficit and fell by the 14-point decision.

After missing so many chances to score and coming up empty against Celina last week in a scoreless tie, St. Marys found the back of the net four times against their rivals to the East.

St. Marys had 12 shots on the target, and the Redskin combination of Sara Foor and Mikayla Halfhill had eight saves.

Minster shot a 323 team score to clinch the title after it was tied with Versailles with matching 8-1 conference records heading into the tournament.
