NEW BREMEN — Going into the final race of the day the St. Henry Redskins boys’ team trailed Sidney Lehman by one point, but in the 3200 relay the Redskins won the race to defeat Sidney Lehman 94-85 to win the 13th annual Cardinal Invitational in a sunny, sunsplashed New Bremen on Saturday.
On the girls side Russia pulled away at the end to defeat Marion Local 134-120. Spencerville was third with 88 points and Sidney was fourth with 78. St. Marys was fifth with 73 and New Bremen was sixth with 33 points. New Knoxville was 12th with 15 points.
ST. MARYS — Johnny Crawford’s bottom of the first could’ve turned disastrous. The first three St. Marys batters reached base off Wapakoneta’s left-handed ace and Roughrider clean-up hitter Mason Gross hit a screamer to the left side of the infield that had multiple runs batted in written all over it.
The ball instead landed in the glove of Wapak third baseman Marshall Gerlach, who snagged the hissing liner and doubled up the runner at third base by stepping on the bag to defuse the potentially explosive half inning.
25 Years Ago This Week – 1988
For the previous five seasons, the St. Marys Roughriders’ baseball tournament ended before it even had a chance to get started. From 1983-1987, the Roughriders had the door slammed shut on them in the opening game of sectionals, but their fate all changed this week in 1988 when they posted a dramatic 8-5 win over the Bath Wildcats on their home field in Lima.
DEFIANCE — Weston Rivers earned his fifth win of the season on the mound for Defiance and the Bulldogs scored six runs in the first two innings in a 7-1 win over the St. Marys baseball team on Tuesday.
Codie Deaton pitched and took the loss for the Roughriders.
St. Marys fell to 2-11 while Defiance kept its years long winning streak in the WBL going and went to 16-0 on the season.
