New Knoxville roars past Elida 60-38 in Kewpee opener

BATH — The New Knoxville girls basketball team knocked off a bit of rust in the first quarter, then sped by Elida in the fast lane in the second half.

The Rangers shot 78 percent from the floor in the second half to roar to a 60-38 win over the Bulldogs in the opening game of the Kewpee Tip Off Classic at Bath High School on Friday night.

New Knoxville shot 6 of 9 in the third quarter and then blistered the nets for a 8 of 9 performance in the fourth quarter to wrap up a second half in which they shot 14 of 18 (78 percent).

St. Marys, Minster bowling teams open season with wins

The St. Marys girls varsity bowling team kicked off their season with a 2330-1805 victory over Lima Temple Christian on Saturday at Plaza Lanes in Celina.

Kristen Dammeyer led the Roughriders with games of 200 and 188 for a 388.

Paige Keysor added a 320 with games of 166 and 154. Drew Houser had games of 153 and 145. Abby Smith had games of 154 and 131 for a 285. Serena Rockwood added a game of 147 and Faith Monin had a 114.

Marion Local drives for last-minute 35-28 win over Covington

PIQUA — Marion Local head football coach Tim Goodwin weighed his options during  a time out with 1:16 left in the game, his team tied with Covington, the ball at midfield and his offense facing a fourth and 10.


Goodwin didn’t want to risk overtime against Covington running back A.J. Oullette and a Buccs triple-option offense that had bedeviled his defense all night. So he put the game in the hands of senior quarterback Adam Bertke and the offense.

Knous, Zaerr named 1st Team All-WBL football selections

A pair of St. Marys Roughriders earned First Team All-Western Buckeye League honors for their work on the gridiron this fall.

Senior safety Jared Knous was named First Team All-WBL defense. Knous intercepted a WBL-best eight passes, led the Roughriders in tackles with 71, broke up ten passes, caused two fumbles, recovered two fumbles and blocked two extra point attempts.

St. Marys junior tight end Quinn Zaerr was named First Team All-WBL on offense. Zaerr  caught 14 passes for a team-best 194 yards.

Dingledine steps down as St. Marys girls soccer coach after 10 seasons, 133 wins

ST. MARYS —  Paul Dingledine oversaw the building of a girls soccer program that went from fledgling to fixture at St. Marys Memorial High School.

Dingledine stepped down from his head coaching position this week after 10 seasons and a 133-43-18 record on Wednesday.

50 Years Ago This Week – 1963
This week in 1963, the New Knoxville Rangers hosted their first basketball game of the 1963-64 campaign and throttled the Mendon Pirates by a final of 82-64. 

The Pirates led 17-14 at the end of the first quarter, but New Knoxville soon grabbed the lead and took a 37-32 edge into the locker room with them at halftime. 

The two squads played evenly through the third quarter before the home team pulled away in the final eight minutes to secure the 18-point victory.
