The New Bremen Athletic Boosters will be holding their 2nd Annual Reds Event featuring Cincinnati Reds Hall of Famer and the only Reds player to pitch a perfect game, Tom Browning on Sunday, Jan. 19 at the New Bremen American Legion.
Joining Tom will be representatives from the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and their traveling display of Cincinnati Reds memorabilia with emphasis on the 1990 Championship Team.
ST. MARYS — Doug Frye will try to rebuild the St. Marys football program — the one he carefully tended for 11 seasons and the one he watched fall into disrepair in the five seasons since he left and coached at rival Wapakoneta.
Frye was officially named head coach of the Roughriders at a St. Marys Board of Education meeting on Wednesday night.
WAPAKONETA — On one great shooting night the New Knoxville Rangers put up more points than they did all last weekend.
New Knoxville scored 20 points in each of the first two quarters in a hot-shooting first half, held off a Wapakoneta rally early in the fourth quarter and then hit its free throws down the stretch for a 77-65 win over the Redskins on Tuesday night.
ELIDA — Guarding Elida’s Dakota Mathias is a handful for any team. When his sidekicks drain shots like they did on Friday night in a 77-59 win over the St. Marys boys basketball team, the Bulldogs are a force.
Elida (8-2, 2-1 WBL) drained 13 three-pointers and shot 67 percent from the floor.
Mathias scored a game-high 29 points to go with 10 assists and six rebounds. The future Purdue Boilermaker was 6 of 10 from beyond the arc.
It was a night to tip the cap in Elida’s direction, St. Marys head coach Dan Hegemier said.
Doug Frye will return to St. Marys as the head football coach, pending board of education approval at the Wednesday, Jan. 15 board meeting. St. Marys Superintendent Shawn Brown on Friday morning confirmed that Frye’s recommendation would appear on next week’s board of education agenda.
The gears began turning on the Frye-to-St. Marys reunion on Thursday afternoon, as Frye informed the Wapakoneta team at an afternoon meeting that he would be stepping down.
