MINSTER — Minster put the ball in the hands of a cool and collected senior in the closing seconds of the Wildcats’ 55-54 win over Spencerville on Saturday night.
Devon Poeppelman delivered with a post-up, pirouette and powerful finish.
Poeppelman posted up his defender, received the ball from freshman point guard Jacob Stechschulte at the right elbow, drove into the paint and spun leftward towards the basket for the game winner with 3.7 seconds.
ST. MARYS — Fort Recovery held the St. Marys boys basketball team without a point in the second quarter to build a big lead and coast to a 58-43 season-opening win on Murotech Court at the Horseshoe on Friday night.
St. Marys recovered with a strong second half that included 37 points put on the scoreboard, but by then Fort Recovery had a lead that at times reached 20 points.
Fifty years ago this week, the St. Marys Roughriders tipped off boys basketball season with a 55-34 victory over Greenville.
As both teams seemed plagued by season-opening jitters and ice-cold shooting, Greenville led after the first quarter, 8-7 only to have St. Marys out-score them 14-2 in the second period to take a 21-10 lead into the locker room at intermission.
FORT LORAMIE — Both Fort Loramie head coach Carla Siegel and New Knoxville coach Tim Hegemier said their teams learned something from Tuesday night’s non-conference tilt.
It’s pretty clear that while both have rough edges as the season begins, once they’re a finished product they’ll be strong squads this season.
Fort Loramie built a double-digit lead and then held off a late New Knoxville charge in the fourth quarter to earn a 55-51 win on Tuesday night.
MINSTER — The Minster girls basketball team picked up their second win of the season as they hosted non-league opponent Mississinawa Valley Tuesday night.
The Wildcats quickly jumped to a big halftime lead and never looked back in a 58-31 win in their home opener.
BATH TOWNSHIP — Returning Midwest Athletic Conference player of the year Haley Horstman scored a game-high 20 points and the New Knoxville girls basketball team generated enough offense in the third and fourth quarters to squeeze past the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays 37-34 on Friday in the opening game of the ninth annual Kewpee Tip-Off Classic held at Bath.
WAPAKONETA — Marion Local has tightrope walked its way to Massillon.
Jacy Goettemoeller took a pitch off right tackle, leapt over a McComb defender and burrowed his way in from seven yards out to lift a charmed Marion Local to a 34-28 win in triple overtime in a Division VI state semi-final at Wapakoneta’s Harmon Field on Friday night.
The Flyers (12-2) will play Newark Catholic on Friday, Nov. 30 at Massillon’s Paul Brown Tiger Stadium with a chance to win back-to-back state crowns and earn the school’s sixth state championship.
WAPAKONETA — Marion Local sophomore running back Jacy Goettemoeller fumbled away the Flyers’ first offensive snap on Friday against St. Henry. In the fourth quarter Goettemoeller scored a gamewinner by turning a 2nd and 31 draw play into a breathtaking 76-yard touchdown.
The Flyers are living and dying with a group of greenhorns.
