ST. MARYS — The New Knoxville Rangers entered their game at St. Marys giving up the second most points per game among Midwest Athletic Conference teams.
New Knoxville head coach Kort Fledderjohann thinks that could be changing if Friday night’s defensive effort was any indication.
The Rangers limited one of the area’s best scorers and held a team under 50 points for the second straight game in a 58-49 win over St. Marys at Memorial High School on Friday.
ELIDA — It all came down to one final possession to decide the opening game of the annual Vicki Mauk Invitational Tournament on Thursday at the Elida Fieldhouse.
The Minster Wildcats trailed by one point but had the ball with 36 seconds left. The Wildcats’ Bridget Geiger got the rebound off a missed shot by Kayla Richard with 4.2 seconds left and was fouled by Imara Haynes. Geiger converted both shots and that was enough to give Minster a 57-56 victory over the Lima Senior Spartans.
CELINA — The St. Marys wrestling team swept a pair of Western Buckeye League matches at Celina High School on Thursday night to run its league record to 4-0 in dual matches.
ELIDA — A 12-0 run midway through the fourth quarter sparked the Elida girls basketball team to a 69-49 win over St. Marys on Thursday evening in a Western Buckeye League contest at the Elida Fieldhouse.
COLDWATER — Coldwater’s late baseline-to-baseline inbounding gamble appeared to end badly, and with a minute left in the game the St. Marys boys basketball team had momentum behind it.
The break turned out to last about a second.
St. Marys’ fourth-quarter comeback fell short in the final minute as Coldwater won its season-opener over the Roughriders 59-52 on Saturday night.
KENTON — Kenton dominated the fourth quarter to rally past St. Marys 48-40 on Friday night in a Western Buckeye League opener to stay unbeaten while denying the Roughriders their first win of the season.
St. Marys led 35-31 after three quarters in a halfcourt battle before Kenton outscored the Roughriders 17-5 in the fourth quarter.
St. Marys senior Garet Fledderjohann led all scorers with 18 points.
Quinn Zaerr added 11 points for the Riders with a pair of 3-pointers.
