The St. Marys boys cross country team captured a season-opening victory in a quad meet at K.C. Geiger Park on Tuesday, paced by meet winner Alex Mielke. The Wapakoneta girls capture the Auglaize County event, while New Knoxville’s girls team turned in the top two times of the race.

St. Marys girls soccer opens with 10-0 win over DSJ

August 24, 2011

Just a few minutes into Tuesday’s season opener between the St. Marys and Delphos St. John’s girls soccer teams, it was clear this was  a new season and the two familiar teams were on the opposite ends of the experience continuum.

The Roughriders blanked the Blue Jays 10-0 in a rematch of last fall’s dramatic district final.

The obvious storyline entering the game was a rematch between teams that met in the Division II district title at Elida game last fall that saw Delphos St. John’s stun St. Marys in overtime penalty kicks.

St. Marys plays final football tune-up in Chicken Bowl

August 20, 2011

Urbana outscored St. Marys 28-10 in three quarters of football in the Chicken Bowl scrimmage at Skip Baughman Stadium on Friday night.

St. Marys scored the game’s first 10 points.

St. Marys struck first in the scrimmage with a long D.J. Manning run. Manning scampered 69 yards down to the Urbana two yard line, punching it in on the next play for the two-yard score with 10:18 left in the first quarter.

St. Marys added a Jarret Taylor field goal from about 25 yards out to make it 10-0.

Roughriders look to turn over a new leaf as they begin scrimmage season

August 12, 2011

New St. Marys head football coach Greg Phillips wanted a fresh start for the players on a Roughrider team that ended last season at 1-9, in disarray and eventually with a new coach.

“I told the players when I first met them we need to learn a few things from last year, but at the same time we need to forget about last year,” said Phillips, who left Oak Hill to head the Roughrider program.

Phillips wanted few preconceived notions and no arbitrary limits on where and how his new players fit into his system when practices began the first week of August.
