St. Marys-Celina rises above records for teams

September 22, 2011

In this part of Ohio, there’s nothing quite like the St. Marys-Celina football rivalry.

Heated and contentious, a rivalry exists between two towns close in proximity and linked by a lake they can’t even agree on what to call. The result is two teams pouring a season’s worth of emotion into one game.

St. Marys (2-2, 1-2 WBL) will travel to Celina (0-4, 0-3 WBL) to face its rival for the 93rd time, hoping to regain the upper hand in a rivalry of which it  lost control for the first time in 12 years last fall.

Wapakoneta at Defiance

Wapakoneta fans may need to take moment to familiarize themselves with Nick Lopez’s name.

They’re going to hear a lot of it Friday night when the Wapakoneta Redskins travel to Defiance to take on the Bulldogs in a Western Buckeye League matchup.

He runs the ball, he catches the ball, he defends, he plays special teams.

Minster (2-2, 0-2 MAC) is coming off a 26-17 loss to Marion Local last week. While the Wildcats jumped out to an early lead, the Flyers scored 19 unanswered points to take control.

Last Friday the New Bremen Cardinals (0-4, 0-2 MAC) played a good game, but turnovers once again turned the tide as the Fort Recovery Indians edged the Cardinals 34-33.

CELINA — A half dozen Roughriders slid head-first for the final 15 yards towards their half-submerged bench to celebrate a shutout win over their rival, making sure any of the last remaining areas on their all-blue jerseys uncaked with mud were covered.

The St. Marys boys soccer team blanked Celina 3-0 on Monday night in field conditions only a laundry detergent manufacturer could love.
