This week in 1988, the Minster Wildcats improved to 4-0 overall and picked up their first Midwest Athletic Conference victory of the season when they dropped the Parkway Panthers by a final of 42-6.
The Wildcats scored twice in the first period and twice more before halftime as they took a 30-0 lead at the break. They continued to roll in the third quarter with two more scores and led 42-0 heading into the fourth.
If the season ended today, Celina and Wapakoneta would both be in the playoffs in Division III's Region 10. Celina is in fourth place in the region with a 4-0 record and 7.7 point average. Wapakoneta is in the sixth position with its 3-1 record and a 6.0 point average. The top eight teams make the playoffs.
NEW BREMEN 3, SHAWNEE 0
With aggressive and hard play the New Bremen Cardinals bounced back against New Knoxville to defeat the Shawnee Indians 25-17, 26-14 and 25-12 on Tuesday.
“We emphasized in practice yesterday that we have to stay aggressive and stay after the ball no matter who we play,” Cardinals head coach Theresa Jenkins said. “After Thursday’s game against New Knoxville we decided that we needed to refocus and we started to get back after the ball.”
The St. Marys girls tennis team closed out the home portion of their schedule with a 3-2 loss to Bluffton on Monday.
St. Marys has lost three straight home matches by that narrow 3-2 score, with a doubles match making the difference.
“It was a familiar script,” St. Marys head coach Brice Brenneman said. “That was a pretty solid first doubles team we were going up against and we had things going our way, but it slipped away from us.”
CELINA — Both teams seemed on the cusp of breaking through on Saturday night. Instead, the St. Marys and Celina boys soccer teams played to a scoreless tie for the second straight season.
Shots rattled off the crossbar, goalkeepers soared through the air to make vital saves and both St. Marys and Celina — after waiting two extra days to renew their rivalry — ended up waiting all 80 minutes for a goal that never appeared.
