Zaerr scores 28, but Van Wert tops St. Marys

February 22, 2014

VAN WERT — St. Marys junior center Quinn Zaerr controlled everything inside the paint on Friday as he put up 28 points and 11 rebounds, but Van Wert padlocked the perimeter defensively in its 60-51 victory over the Roughriders in the Western Buckeye League and regular season finale.

Zaerr’s career night wasn’t enough to keep up with an energized Van Wert team that spit fire after losing back-to-back games last weekend to Wapakoneta and Delphos Jefferson.

“Put on a hat!” St. Marys boys basketball coach Dan Hegemier bellowed out at Nathan Wilker as the junior exited Memorial High School after a 67-59 win against the defending Division III state champ  Ottawa-Glandorf.

It was the most forceful instruction Hegemier had to give out Friday night. As the St. Marys boys basketball team gains confidence,  Hegemier can do less steering and let his athletes do their thing on the court.

The Roughriders improvised their way to a fourth straight win by answering every O-G rally with one of their own.
