CELINA — Celina’s defensive pressure took its toll midway through the second half, as a physically and mentally fatigued St. Marys squad turned the ball over and watched the Bulldogs turn the miscues into points.
Celina wore down the Roughriders and pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 71-52 win at a packed Celina Fieldhouse on Friday night. It’s the seventh straight win for Celina over St. Marys, a winning streak that dates back to 2005.
MINSTER —New Bremen made a go-ahead basket and got two defensive stops in the game’s final 30 seconds to keep pace in the Midwest Athletic Conference and down rival Minster, 45-43, on Friday night.
With 23.9 seconds left Carson Manger’s offensive stickback gave the Cardinals a 44-43 lead.
After a Minster turnover, New Bremen’s Luke Schwieterman knocked down a free throw to give the Cardinals a two-point lead.
NEW KNOXVILLE – The Delphos St. John’s boys basketball team used a good first half to get a lead against the New Knoxville Rangers and they rode that in the second half to defeat the Rangers 65-47 in a key MAC game played at The Barn.
The Blue Jays led 18-7 after one quarter and 40-19 at the half.
SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — The St. Marys wrestling team continued its strong run against Western Buckeye League teams on Thursday night.
The Roughriders earned a pair of wins at a tri-match at Shawnee. St. Marys picked up five pins in its 43-31 win over Shawnee and topped Defiance 49-26.
ST. MARYS — Celina quickly took any drama out of a rivalry game by scoring the game’s first 28 points in the Bulldogs’ 48-17 win over St. Marys.
“That might be one of our best starts ever,” Celina head coach Brian Stetler said. “You never know on the road how you’re going to come out against an arch-rival. Our girls stepped it up in the beginning and pretty much set the tone early. It doesn’t always happen that way, but it did tonight.”
ST. MARYS — An NBA All-Star Weekend 3-point shooting contest it was not, but the Bath boys basketball team left St. Marys Memorial High School still tied for the Western Buckeye League lead.
The 19-point win was anything but routine, though. Bizarre is a more fitting description.
The Wildcats sewed up a 56-37 win over the Roughriders early in the second half with another showcase of energy on defense and on the offensive glass that makes Bath a league title contender this winter.
Area boys basketball teams were in action on Friday night:
NEW KNOXVILLE 56, MARION LOCAL 49, OT
MARIA STEIN — The New Knoxville boys basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter and controlled the overtime to earn a 56-49 win over Marion Local on Friday night at The Hangar.
The Rangers’ first Midwest Athletic Conference win of the season came with a big night from beyond the 3-point arc. The Rangers hit 11 three-pointers and went 11-of-22 from long distance — including 7-of-11 in the second half.
