St. Marys advances in tournament

May 13, 2013

ELIDA — St. Marys outfielder Tristan Becker dove headfirst in shallow center to snag a quick-sinking liner to end the bottom of the fourth inning, stranding a pair of baserunners and denying Kenton its first and game-tying run.

St. Marys starting pitcher Codie Deaton didn’t need much help in Saturday’s tournament opener, but he found it in plays on defense like Becker's and in the bats of his Roughrider teammates.

Wapakoneta's Crawford shuts out St. Marys

May 3, 2013

ST. MARYS — Johnny Crawford’s bottom of the first could’ve turned disastrous. The first three St. Marys batters reached base off Wapakoneta’s left-handed ace and Roughrider clean-up hitter Mason Gross hit a screamer to the left side of the infield that had multiple runs batted in written all over it.

The ball instead landed in the glove of Wapak third baseman Marshall Gerlach, who snagged the hissing liner and doubled up the runner at third base by stepping on the bag to defuse the potentially explosive half inning.
