Artists Add Creations

ST. MARYS — A group has been devoting its time working indoors this summer, as a few high school students have diligently been working to add some of their own flair to a local school.

Members of Memorial High School's Art Club, which is advised by Jen Christopher, have been spending a few days a week during their summer break to add some color to the gymnasium at St. Marys Primary School.

"Before school was out, they started sketching," St. Marys Primary School Principal Sue Sherman said.

Phillip Lewis, 55

Phillip Lewis, 55, of 117 S. Main St., St. Marys, died on Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at his residence.

Auglaize County Coroner Dr. Thomas R. Freytag has ordered an autopsy be performed to determine the cause of his death. Arrangements are being completed with the Miller Funeral Homes in St. Marys.

James Raterman, 67

July 1, 2011

James Raterman, 67, of Sidney, formerly of Russia, died on Wednesday afternoon June 29, 2011.

He was born on June 1, 1944, in Piqua, to George and Marie (Peltier) Raterman, and they preceded him in death.

On Oct. 17, 1964, he  married Joyce Voisard, and she preceded him in death on April 4, 1987. On July 24, 1994, he married Joyce Meyer, and she survives him.

St. Marys Native Heeds Call To Priesthood

ST. MARYS — After a lifetime of helping others, Jerry Schetter, a life-long resident of St. Marys, has heeded God’s call to become a Catholic priest.

Schetter grew up in a strong, Catholic family. He attended Holy Rosary School and grew up observing his uncle, who is a priest. Schetter said his uncle never told him to become a priest; however, his presence had an influence on Schetter’s life.

Library Hosts Craft Event

ST. MARYS — Children filled the meeting room at a local library to create a piece of their own on Thursday.

As part of the St. Marys Community Public Library’s summer reading program, children were able to create a necklace or bracelet to take home with them.

“We are doing beads today,” Youth Services Coordinator Paula Drummond said. “We focused on Africa this week, so we’re making beaded necklaces/bracelets.”

Harold W. (Hal) Huwer, 84,

Harold W. (Hal) Huwer, 84, of Kettering, passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at Kettering Medical Center.

He was born in St. Marys.

He married Evelyn, and she preceded him in death.

He is survived by a son, Michael; a daughter, Lisa; a grandson, Christian Huwer, who is serving his country in Afaganistan as an airman in the Air Force; a daughter-in-law, Courtney Huwer, of Barksdale Air Force Base; two great-grandsons, Landon and Mason, of Barksdale Air Force Base.  

Phyllis Marie Cook, 80

Phyllis Marie Cook, 80, of 806 Laurel Drive, St. Marys, died at 11:55 a.m. Monday, June 27, 2011, at Otterbein St. Marys Retirement Community.

She was born on Feb. 25, 1931, in Wexford County, Mich., the daughter of Harry and Lou (Smith) Deuel, and they preceded her in death.

She married Everett Goldsmith in 1951, and he preceded her in death; she married Dean Cook in 1977, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 4, 2006.

St. Marys Hits 24 of 26 Indicators

ST. MARYS — According to preliminary numbers from an assessment taken during the school year that were recently released, a local school district has made the state requirements but is still struggling to meet the federal guidelines.

St. Marys City Schools received its results from the Ohio Achievement Assessments taken earlier this year.

The data showed St. Marys students met 24 out of the 26 state indicators — eighth-grade science and fifth-grade math were the ones they did not meet.

Alum Project Wraps Up

ST. MARYS — Contractors tasked with applying chemicals to help reduce phosphorus levels in Grand Lake St. Marys are scheduled to wrap up the monthlong project today.

HAB Aquatic Solutions won the bid to apply alum to the center 4,900 acres of the lake in order to neutralize phosphorus already in the water. Phosphorus is a food source for algae, a major issue at the lake.

Francis L. Smith, 97

Francis L. Smith, 97, of 217 E. Oak St., Celina, died at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at the Gardens of Celina.

He was born on Nov. 19, 1913, in Coldwater, to Louis and Caroline (Schwartz) Smith, and they preceded him in death.

On Oct. 18, 1937, he married Anna Margaret Zender, and she preceded him in death on March 2, 2007.

He is survived by a son, Patrick (Janet) Smith of Celina; two daughters, Judy (Joe) Otte of North Star and Elaine (Jim) Loughridge of Coldwater; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren.
