Carl R. “Dick” Heil, 92, of Cridersville, formerly of Wapakoneta, died at 12:20 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, at Otterbein-Cridersville.
He was born on Nov. 21, 1918, in Auglaize County, the son of Herbert and Emma (Cook) Heil, and they preceded him in death.
On July 10, 1945, he married Lanetta Mills, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 4, 1977. On Dec. 22, 1984, he married Mary E. Shaw, and she survives him.
ST. MARYS — With the help of generous donations and a lot of hard work, an area charitable organization was able to provide a laptop to a local girl in need.
Tara Sterling, 13, of St. Marys, received an Acer laptop from Bikes and Cars For a Cause, an area organization that aims to help children, whether individually or through donating money to charities.
NEW BREMEN — Twenty five shocks, seven injections of epinephrine and a cardiac surgery were what it took to save Max the “Miracle Man” Cotterman after going into sudden cardiac arrest, but the most important factor in his care was the 91 minutes of CPR he had received from family, friends, the New Bremen EMS Squad and hospital staff.
Susan L. Warner, 52, of 207 S. Franklin St., New Bremen, died on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, at her residence of natural causes.
She was born on May 19, 1959, in St. Marys, to Karl and Evelyn (Gieseke) Warner.
She is survived by her sister, Carole (Larry) (Warner-Eversman) LaVeen of Sidney; a nephew, Allen (Kim) Eversman of Wapakoneta; one great-nephew; one great-niece.
Betty L. Schroer, 88, of 519 Westhaven Drive, New Bremen, died at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at the Heritage Manor Nursing Center in Minster.
She was born on Jan. 21, 1923, in St. Marys, to Virgil and Malinda (Gieseke) Horn.
On Sept. 25, 1955, she married Curtis Schroer, and he survives her in New Bremen.
She is also survived by her son, Dwight Schroer of New Bremen; a daughter, Kathleen (Eugene) Aufderhaar of Bluffton.
Joyce E. Kogge, 75, of 211 N. Vine St., St. Marys, died at 7:51 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
She was born on Jan. 9, 1936, in St. Marys, the daughter of E.B. and Lillian (Piper) Hall, and they preceded her in death.
On Feb. 22, 1952, she married LeRoy Kogge, and he survives her at the residence.
Robert E. Goodwin, 91, of 6141 County Road 33A, St. Marys, died on Monday, Aug. 8, 2011, at his residence.
He was born on July 31, 1911, the son of William and Zelia (Dixon) Goodwin, and they preceded him in death.
On May 23, 1940, at the United Church of Christ in New Bremen, he married Grace W. Sollman, and she preceded him in death in February 1987.
He is survived by a son, Gary (Bonnie) Goodwin of Wapakoneta; seven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren.
ST. MARYS — A local board of education approved a new face of its district during its meeting Wednesday evening.
Members of the St. Marys Board of Education approved Jerry Skiver as the interim superintendent. The motion came after board members entered into executive session to discuss compensation of a public employee or official early on in the meeting and then reconvened.
Skiver, who will be in the position for the 2011-12 school year, will officially begin his contract Monday.
ST. MARYS — Seven people competing for a pair of board of education spots highlight a packed ballot in November.
ST. MARYS — Gabrielle Keller was named queen Wednesday night in the 2011 St. Marys SummerFest Little Miss Pageant held in the St. Marys Memorial High School Performing Arts Center.
The pageant hosted 30 contestants between the ages of 5 and 7 this year, double last year’s amount.
“The first 15 spots were full within a half a day,” Co-Chair Becky Ruvoldt said, noting the large demand caused them to open the pageant up to more girls.
