Soldier Drops By Physical Education Class In St. Marys

ST. MARYS — An Army soldier visited a local physical education class to give the students a taste of what it takes to be a soldier.

Staff Sergeant Brent Burnfield visited Monica VanderHorst’s advanced physical education classes Friday. Burnfield had the students rotate through approximately 10 stations, ranging from push-ups to lunges to bear crawls down the hallway.

“Sometimes we do circuit training,” Burnfield said. “We do all different exercises to help out with our physical fitness tests and physical exercises.”

School Takes Precaution

ST. MARYS — A local school district went into cautionary mode after being informed of a “potentially dangerous” situation by the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office Friday morning.

Superintendent Jerry Skiver noted the district received a phone call informing it of the situation.

“We had information of an issue off campus that could potentially be dangerous to the kids at school,” he said. “We went into controlled access.”

Controlled access, he noted, involves extensive monitoring of visitors.

Riders Bleed For Others

ST. MARYS — Local high school seniors took time out of their school day to give back as part of an annual blood drive on Friday.

Memorial High School students hosted a blood drive with the American Red Cross in their gymnasium, with high school seniors, their teachers and their administrators donating blood.

Memorial High School senior Joni Brown said Friday was her first time donating blood.

“I’m donating to help save lives,” Brown said while she was giving blood.

Jean M. Lewis, 73

November 4, 2011

Jean M. Lewis, 73, died suddenly after a brave fight against a very aggressive cancer on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, at St. Rita’s Medical Center. She had recently returned to Bluffton to enjoy her retirement.

She was born on Aug. 30, 1938, the daughter of Charles Bernard Lewis and Catherine Bockrath, and they preceded her in death.

Alice J. Gengler, 85

November 4, 2011

Alice J. Gengler, 85, of Coldwater, died at 6:47 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, at Briarwood Village in Coldwater.

She was born on Nov. 29, 1925, in Dayton, to the late Edward H. and Elnora E. (Borgerding) Kemper, and they preceded her in death.

On June 28, 1952, in St. Henry, she married James N. Gengler, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 12, 2005.

Minster cross country, pair of Rangers head to state CC Saturday

The Minster girls cross country team looks to set a new OHSAA record for most state titles when it runs in the Division III state meet on Saturday at National Trail Raceway in Hebron.

The Wildcats captured their third straight state crown and 10th overall last November at Scioto Downs in Columbus. Now Minster will need to attack a new course after the OHSAA moved the state championships site after 26 years at Scioto Downs. A win would give Minster 10 girls state titles — breaking a tie with the Caldwell boys program.

Teen Taken Into Custody

ST. MARYS — A 15-year-old male was taken into custody Friday morning after allegedly making threats involving a firearm.

Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon told The Evening Leader deputies took the teen into custody following a two-hour search for him. Deputies arrived at a residence along Glynwood Road after receiving a phone call at 7 a.m. indicating the boy told his mother he was going to harm himself or her with a handgun.

High School Playoff Lookahead: Wapak takes to the road in playoff opener

Wapakoneta head football coach Doug Frye is hoping the rough-and-tumble Western Buckeye League schedule has preapred the Redskins for the playoffs when the Wildcats will face the Franklin Wildcats in a Division II regional quarterfinal at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Franklin High School.

“You see nine straight teams of a variety of spreads to runs,” Frye said. “You do see a lot of good football teams throughout the year.
