Fireman's Picnic Offers Fun, Competition

NEW KNOXVILLE — Area residents will flock to New Knoxville’s Community Park this weekend for a day full of activities at an annual fire department fundraiser.

Ceremony Set For National Guard

ST. MARYS — Approximately 90 soldiers based at the St. Marys unit of the Ohio Army National Guard will be honored at a ceremony later this month.

A Call to Duty ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. Oct. 16 at Memorial High School to mark the deployment of St. Marys Alpha Company of the Special Troops Battalion 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. The unit was called into active duty earlier this year for a yearlong deployment that will feature service in Afghanistan.

Volunteer Struck By Vehicle

CELINA — A volunteer with a local law enforcement agency was hit by a car while directing traffic at a crash location.

In a news release issued this morning, Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey said his office is investigating a serious injury crash that involved a member of the MCERV (Mercer County Emergency Response Volunteers) who was assisting the sheriff’s office at a crash scene.

Group Returns For Performance

ST. MARYS — A French Canadian musical group showcased their talents at a local college campus Monday night, and it will also be performing at a local senior center, as well as various other locations around the area.

For the second year in a row, Mauvais Sort is visiting this area and is holding multiple performances as part of the Ohio Arts Council’s International Music and Performing Arts in Communities Tour (IMPACT).

Cards Embark On Reading Week

WBL Tennis Meet

LIMA — The St. Marys girls tennis team finished fourth at the Western Buckeye League tournament at UNOH on Saturday, and the Roughriders ended the season tied for third in the overall WBL standings.

St. Marys’ Alex Spencer finished third at second singles, defeating Van Wert’s Jenna Waterman in the third-place match.

St. Marys second doubles duo of Allie Zimmerman and Ariel Dodson finished third, defeating Shawnee’s Anita Kottopalli  and Lindsey McKinley in the third-place match.

CELINA — Officials from a Wisconsin firm gave a presentation to members of a lake group Saturday morning that included plans to help clean up the watershed and water of Grand Lake St. Marys.

Girls Compete For Little Miss Title

MINSTER — There’s a new little queen in town.

Macy Prenger, 6, the daughter of Steve and Theresa Prenger, won the 2011 Little Miss Oktoberfest Contest, which was held at the Minster Knights of Columbus Hall on Saturday morning.

Paige Schulte, 6, the daughter of Craig and Pam Schulte, was the first runner-up, while Lexi Niemeyer, 6, the daughter of Matt and Alycia Niemeyer, was the second runner-up.

The annual event was open to all 5 and 6-year-old girls who live in Minster.

Butler Takes Home Crown

MINSTER — Ten area girls competed to represent their hometown, with a Minster High School junior being chosen as Miss Oktoberfest during the annual competition held Saturday afternoon.

Hannah Butler, the daughter of Pat and Becky Butler, represented Stroh, Johnson and Company in the 2011 Miss Oktoberfest competition, beating out nine other girls for the title.

“I’m so excited,” Butler said after being announced the winner. “Everyone has been so great, and I’m just really honored to be chosen.”

Roughriders fall in 2OT to Defiance

A St. Marys missed extra point along with  a Trey Guilliam catch and serpentine touchdown run in double overtime proved to be the differences in the Roughriders’ 21-20 loss to Defiance on homecoming at Skip Baughman Stadium.

St. Marys head coach Greg Phillips said he had a bad feeling the missed PAT would come back to bite his team.

“I made the comment when we doinked the extra point to Coach (Nick) Yahl that we’re a cat that just lost its ninth life,” Phillips said.
