Wapakoneta head football coach Doug Frye is hoping the rough-and-tumble Western Buckeye League schedule has preapred the Redskins for the playoffs when the Wildcats will face the Franklin Wildcats in a Division II regional quarterfinal at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Franklin High School.
“You see nine straight teams of a variety of spreads to runs,” Frye said. “You do see a lot of good football teams throughout the year.
Celina falls to Columbus DeSales
ONTARIO — The Cellina volleyball team bowed out of the Division II regional at the hands of Columbus DeSales, 25-14, 25-14, 25-17, on Thursday night.
Celina ended a season in which it won its fourth straight outright Western Buckeye League title.
St. Henry moves on, Fort Loramie loses
TIPP CITY — The St. Henry Redskins are a win away from state after downing Jackson Center, 27-25, 25-13, 25-13, on Thursday night at Tippecanoe High School.

50 Years Ago This Week – 1961
Following a 0-0 deadlock at the end of the first period, St. Marys lit up the scoreboard first in their rivalry battle with Wapakoneta when Terry Young blasted through the Redskin defense for the 22-yard score. The extra point run was unsuccessful, but the Roughriders stayed in command by six points in the second period.
Dale Eversman, 30, of rural New Bremen, died on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, at his residence.
Auglaize County Coroner Dr. Thomas R. Freytag has ordered that an autopsy be performed to determine the cause of his death.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Miller Funeral Homes in St. Marys.
Roberta E. Barnes, 94, of 11110 Circle Drive, St. Marys, died 6:06 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at Otterbein—St. Marys Retirement Community.
She was born on April 24, 1917, in Willow Springs, Mo., to Frank and Carrie Bell (Ball) Ruby, and they preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son, Patrick E. Baze of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; a grandson; various nieces and nephews.
Private family services and burial are planned.
John W. Robbins, 69, of Celina, died on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital.
He was born on April 13, 1942, to Roy A. and Opal G. (Monroe) Robbins, and they preceded him in death.
On May 7, 1977, he married Naomi Hover, and she preceded him in death on July 14, 2009.
He is survived by a son, Dwayne (Kimberly) Beal of Germantown; a brother; a sister; a brother-in-law; a sister-in-law; five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa Beal.
ST. MARYS — A nationally recognized science firm has whittled down potential solutions that could help Grand Lake St. Marys.
Battelle recently unveiled a comprehensive, draft report that details its recommendations to help restore the water quality of Grand Lake St. Marys as well as how to limit phosphorus from entering the body of water. Earlier this year, members of the Grand Lake Restoration Commission tabbed the firm to review the more than 70 proposals it received regarding possible solutions to help the lake.
