OHSAA Playoff Standings released
The Ohio High School Athletic Association released its first Harbin Computer Rankings on Tuesday. The top eight teams in each region will reach the playoffs following Week 10.
Division III, Region 10
St. Marys (2-2) is ranked 15th in Division III Region 10 with a 3.4 average,
with wins over winless Sidney and 2-2 Lima Bath.
Elida (3-1) leads Region 10 with a 6.675 average. Defiance (2-2) is 16th with a 3.125 average, and Shawnee (2-2) is 17th with a 3.05 average.
ST. MARYS — Local board of education members discussed another facilities project during their monthly meeting Wednesday night.
St. Marys Board of Education members discussed the completion of the new athletic complex and funding for the project, going back and forth between their options.
“In my own personal opinion, I don’t see any time before 2013,” Board Vice President Rees McKee said of the possible schedule for the athletic complex. “We still have got a few things against us.”
WAPAKONETA — A former member of the Wapakoneta Police Department and the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office alleges she was sexually assaulted last year in her Auglaize County home by the Shelby County sheriff, resulting in his arrest early Wednesday.
ST. MARYS — Hungry residents looking for a place to get a home-cooked meal have a new option.
Kate’s Kitchen, 810 S. Wayne St., St. Marys, opened its doors Wednesday at the former location of the Knotty Pine. For owners Dennis and Kathy Burden, owning the restaurant is a dream come true.
“It’s been her lifelong dream to open up a restaurant,” Burden told The Evening Leader as his wife was busy cooking in the kitchen. “So that’s what we did.”
Karl P. Kohler Jr., 89, of Wapakoneta, died at 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, at the Wapakoneta Manor.
He was born on Nov. 2, 1921, in Columbus, to Karl P. and Mary Nelle (Chiesa) Kohler, and they preceded him in death.
On Sept. 1, 1950, he married Sue Carole Spees, and she survives in Wapakoneta.
He is also survived by two sons, Kevin S. “Coach” (Carla) Kohler of Wapakoneta, Kim E. (Lisa) Kohler of Chelsea, Ala.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law.
ST. MARYS — A lively crowd of area seniors gathered Tuesday afternoon at the Auglaize County Council on Aging for its annual Senior Day celebration.
Senior Day is celebrated in conjunction with National Senior Center Month.
“National Senior Center Month has been celebrated since the 1940s,” Auglaize County Council on Aging Director Christina Roby said. “We want to give back and have a little fun.”
WAPAKONETA — Shelby County's sheriff was arrested today on a sex charge.
In a news release issued to The Evening Leader, Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon said Shelby County Sheriff Dean A. Kimpel, 57, was arrested at 8:19 a.m. today on an indictment handed down by a grand jury. Kimpel was indicted on one count of sexual battery, a third-degree felony.
ST. MARYS — State officials on Monday ruled out a reported illness as being linked to Grand Lake St. Marys.
Ohio Department of Health spokesperson Tessie Pollock released an update of the statuses of statewide reports of illness being examined for possible links to Ohio waterways. Officials ruled one of the two reports that are currently under investigation regarding Grand Lake St. Marys as not a case. That ruling means any report of illness cannot be linked to the lake.
ST. MARYS — After months of teetering back and forth, unemployment rates in Auglaize County tumbled more than half a percent in August.
According to data released Tuesday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Auglaize County’s unemployment rate settled in at 7.4 percent — down from 8.1 percent in July. The unemployment rate a year ago was 8.6 percent.
